Rebel Wilson is clarifying matters regarding The Deb, following media reports about the film, as the legal dispute over it continues.
After Charlotte MacInnes sang at Cannes on Friday from Len Blavatnik’s yacht, where ‘The Deb’ was funded, the Instagram account for the film posted stories with critical remarks about MacInnes. Wilson, who is handling the movie because of legal issues surrounding its release schedule, is believed to be in charge of this account.
Charlotte MacInnes was seen wearing a questionable traditional Indian attire on Len Blavatnik’s lavish yacht in Cannes, while singing a song from an unreleased movie. This is ironic since her dishonest actions and support for those hindering the film’s release have led to its potential never seeing the light of day. A subsequent post expressed joy over Charlotte securing her record deal despite the 300 individuals who worked tirelessly on the film ‘The Deb‘ wanting it to be released.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Wilson’s team stated that she is committed to sharing the movie with the public: “The entire Deb team eagerly anticipates the day when this film can be unveiled to the world. Rebel is incredibly proud of this project and deeply appreciative of everyone’s dedication in making her directorial debut a reality.
Over the last summer, Wilson shared a video on Instagram, alleging that producers Amanda Ghost, Gregory Cameron, and Vince Holden had been involved in financial misconduct (embezzlement) and inappropriate behavior (sexual harassment). Furthermore, she claimed they intentionally halted the movie’s release at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival.
Initially, the producers filed a defamation lawsuit against Wilson, alleging that she was trying to secure a writing credit for the movie. This prompted Wilson to file a countersuit several months later. In November, THR reported that Wilson’s attempt to dismiss the defamation case was unsuccessful. In response to Wilson’s accusations, MacInnes has refuted claims of abuse on Ghost’s part.
This film, titled “The Deb“, revolves around a high school outcast portrayed by Natalie Abbott. She partners with her cousin (MacInnes) to create chaos at an upcoming debutante ball. Making her first foray into directing movies, Wilson guides the production based on Hannah Reilly’s screenplay. The film is an adaptation of a stage show that premiered in Sydney during 2022.
