Grey’s Anatomy can finally get rid of the character everyone loves to hate

After the intense season finale of Grey’s Anatomy last week, there’s much to ponder upon. Remarkably, the series skillfully resolved multiple plotlines while keeping some mysteries unsolved for the upcoming fall season. Additionally, it left many characters and their relationships hanging in the balance, which is unusual for such a significant season finale.

As a film enthusiast, I couldn’t wait to see how Teddy and Owen’s relationship would unfold throughout this season, given their ongoing marital and friendship strife that seemed to have lasted forever. Their experiment with an open marriage had shown promise, and I found myself hoping for their success. However, it became clear in the end that Teddy desired more than just being chosen; she needed to make a choice that was best for herself.

Indeed, my feelings were running high towards the closing moments of the episode when she confided in Owen that she was prioritizing herself, romantically speaking. To be honest, I’ve always cherished their friendship and found their romantic dynamic less appealing. But now, it seems there might be a genuine opportunity for Teddy to encounter someone who could bring her lasting joy.

Indeed, the closing scenes of the episode seem to hint that Teddy might have been in the burning OR – but if that were true, it would certainly tug at my heartstrings. Despite not being a fan of their relationship, I’ve grown quite fond of Teddy over the past few seasons. For now, let’s imagine she remains, while Owen – at long last – is the one to depart.

As a film enthusiast, I’ve grown accustomed to Owen’s presence, but it’s high time for a change. He could be with Nora, or perhaps find another love interest, it doesn’t matter to me. He might consider a new job at another hospital or work with veterans – whatever floats his boat. This situation presents an excellent opportunity for the creators to write him off the show.

There are aspects of Owen that I appreciate, and I believe he’s unfairly criticized at times. But I find it hard to imagine where they could take his story next. Another romantic entanglement? More children? More emotional upheavals, possibly jeopardizing his medical license with each questionable choice? Can we sustain this narrative for much longer without it feeling contrived and unrealistic?

In essence, since we’re dealing with “Grey’s,” it seems likely that the storyline for this character will continue indefinitely. However, they’ve provided an opportunity for him to depart, and while a part of me hesitates due to sentimental reasons, introducing a fresh trauma surgeon with a unique backstory could bring intriguing plotlines. Perhaps this new character could become Teddy’s romantic interest, offering a reason to look forward to the next phase of her love story. This change could offer something exciting, something different, and ultimately, something positive.
