Hunter Schafer has been quite visible recently: On TikTok expressing disapproval towards the Trump administration, appearing fabulous in a stylish Prada outfit at the Met Gala, shooting season three of HBO’s Euphoria, and representing various fashion and beauty brands, such as collaborating with Harris Dickinson and Damson Idris for Prada. The most recent project showcasing the actor/model/activist is a campaign for the Mugler house and its latest fragrance in the Angel line, called Angel Stellar.
Schafer initially represented Angel Elixir in 2023, and is now back with the brand’s newest fragrance, Stellar. The trans activist expresses that the fundamental Mugler Angel scent resonates deeply with her self-image, which is the essence of what perfume represents. In simpler terms, wearing this perfume feels like putting on a pair of high heels or makeup. In a sense, it assists in projecting a vibrant femininity from within to without, and she has always found that it complements her well.
She describes this recent version of the fragrance as “more refined” than the initial one, with its “rich, powdery pistachio, amber-like sweet” undertones blending harmoniously with “fresher hints of bergamot.” It’s a wonderful evolution on something I have a deep connection to. Sounds like another admirer of Angel? Her grandmother. She was thrilled to learn that I’m part of the Mugler Angel family as she wore it in the past (it debuted in 1992).
As a fan, I had the incredible opportunity to be part of the campaign shoot, and let me tell you, it was nothing short of amazing! Mugler handpicked London-based prodigy Jordan Hemingway to direct this project. His ability to convey the emotions we aimed to capture during the three-day shoot in Barcelona left us all speechless. I must admit, Barcelona was a new adventure for me, and it had been on my bucket list for years. Fast forward a couple of months, and I found myself back in the vibrant city for Prime Video’s upcoming limited series, Blade Runner: 2099, currently in production. What an incredible journey!
This individual, who styles himself as a fan of science fiction and played a role in the 2023 movie “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” is intrigued by the intersection of aesthetics and innovation.
Watching how traditional notions of beauty evolve as augmented reality becomes more commonplace, and how the beauty industry adapts to this shift, is something truly intriguing. Given that augmented reality is swiftly becoming a standard feature in our daily lives, we are seeing its application in various ways within the beauty sector – from experimenting with makeup and hairstyles virtually, to assessing skin health for personalized advice, and even matching foundation shades flawlessly to an individual’s complexion.
Instead of hinting a futuristic Hunger Games Panem Capitol-like aesthetic for her personal style, Schafer, representing Shiseido since 2022, usually opts for streamlined hairstyles and understated makeup in public events. Her preferred red carpet appearance over the past years is the pink Prada gown paired with minimal makeup, which she wore at the 2024 Golden Globe awards. She admired the way her dress billowed in the wind and appreciated the “uncomplicated, minimalistic beauty” of that particular look as well.
As a gamer with a passion for fashion, I’ve always found clothing as my canvas to showcase my individuality. Unlike my friend Zendaya who’s slayed the red carpet with her impeccable method dressing, I prefer to steer clear of that approach. Instead, I aim to create something unique and reflective, not a carbon copy. As I put together an outfit, I want it to spark intrigue or reflection, not just be a direct duplicate.
Besides expressing herself, her art is another outlet. Interestingly, it’s also her primary way of dealing with turmoil, as seen when her new passport arrived this year bearing an M for male. (Schafer transitioned to female at age 14, in 2013.) She vented on social media about the Trump administration’s policy change, which requires identification to reflect the gender a person was assigned at birth.
Instead of seeking tranquility in scents, baths, or candles during such times, she finds solace in her family and friends who provide a sense of stability for her, and her art. She admits that she deeply cherishes drawing, illustrating, and painting, carrying her sketchbook around everywhere to keep herself connected to the earth.
