Don’t Worry, M3GAN 2.0 Director Promises Sequel Keeps “Horror DNA” of Original Movie

In about a month from now when it hits theaters, “M3GAN 2.0” will broaden the scope of its action-packed franchise by introducing a new genre element. The title character, the lethal robot, will face off against another ruthless machine named Amelia in this exciting showdown.

Rest assured, writer, director, and executive producer Gerard Johnstone ensures that the sequel maintains the technological-horror atmosphere reminiscent of the original. In other words, he confirmed that we won’t be straying too far from what made M3GAN appealing in the first place. He recently shared this insight with SFX Magazine.

For More on M3GAN

1. If the day ever comes for Abigail and M3GAN to face off, I’d be all for it as a gamer!

2. After giving it some serious thought, I’ve decided that my child won’t be getting a M3GAN doll this Christmas.

3. From what I’ve heard, the final showdown between Abigail and M3GAN in ‘M3GAN’ was handled quite differently in the original version.

M3GAN 2.0 writer-director Gerard Johnstone teases techno-horror sequel

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but acknowledge that while this film straddles the action-comedy genre, it undeniably retains its horror roots. Yet, what truly stands out is the enigmatic character of M3GAN and her unique demeanor. This aspect, which we enjoy exploring, is indeed the heart and soul of the production.

Two years after the initial film, the plot of “M3GAN 2.0” revolves around Amelia, a covert military weapon, played by Ivanna Sakhno, who employs technology similar to that used in M3GAN. As you might anticipate, Amelia starts to challenge her human developers, leading roboticist-turned-activist Gemma (Allison Williams) and her 14-year-old niece Cady (Violet McGraw) to reactivate the doll that almost caused their demise. With no other choice, they must decide if M3GAN, portrayed by Amie Donald and Jenna Davis, can be relied upon.

In the SFX interview, Johnstone pointed out that it’s uncertain whether she can truly rely on her; what she says might not be genuine. He also raised the question about her true nature – whether she’s genuinely conscious or simply an artificial intelligence. Moreover, Johnstone suggested that M3GAN’s skill in manipulation could be explored across various narratives and genres.

M3GAN 2.0 is to M3GAN what Terminator 2: Judgement Day was to Terminator

In his latest project, James Wan aimed to emulate the structure of “Terminator 2: Judgment Day,” where the initially malevolent character was transformed into a hero, and simultaneously, he sought to create a new, more powerful adversary.

In an interview with Empire for their summer 2025 issue, it was mentioned that since the initial inspiration behind M3GAN was a humorous take on the Terminator concept, but swapping Arnold Schwarzenegger for a lethal doll, it made sense that the sequel would be reminiscent of “Terminator 2: Judgement Day.” They acknowledged that for M3GAN to face a challenge, her adversary needed to be significantly more formidable.

When does M3GAN 2.0 come out?

The upcoming M3GAN 2.0 will hit cinemas on June 27. For now, tickets aren’t available, but stay tuned for frequent updates here!
