WARNING: SPOILERS ahead for Duster season 1, episode 2.
In the finale of Duster season 1, episode 2, Jim and his father, Wade, secretly inter the remains of an individual in a desert locale, prior to the arrival of a cryptic political figure. The second episode of Duster’s first season picks up from where its series premiere left off, delving into Jim’s fresh alliance as an undercover operative for FBI agent Nina Hayes. As Jim navigates across the American Southwest in his iconic 1970 cherry red Plymouth Duster, he pursues a notorious pair of shoes. Meanwhile, a shadowy figure known as “Sunglasses” exerts force on the crooked Phoenix police sergeant Sgt. Groomes. However, events take an unexpected turn when Sunglasses’ associate, Charlie, is killed.
Without delay, Groomes moves swiftly towards Jim after noticing his conversation with Nina at the finale of season 1, episode 1 of Duster. With Groomes posing a threat to Jim’s undercover identity from the get-go, Jim seeks assistance from a criminal figure known as Sunglasses. Intrigued by the prospect of obtaining Elvis Presley’s iconic blue suede shoes, Sunglasses consents to help Jim. Armed with this information from Izzy, Jim navigates his way to a party in Palm Springs to claim the shoes and fulfill his promise. Staggeringly, Groomes is fatally wounded but manages to take down Charlie before Sunglasses fires two more shots into him.
How Sgt. Groomes Survived Multiple Gunshots From Sunglasses
The Religious Groomes Likely Believes He Was Saved By God
remarkably, Sergeant Groomes endured numerous gunshots inflicted by Charlie and Sunglasses, who initially seemed to have fatally shot him. Throughout season 1, episode 2 of Duster, Groomes repeatedly mentioned his strong religious faith, suggesting he was divinely guided to overhear Jim’s conversation with Nina in the first place. It seems almost divine intervention that enabled Groomes to survive multiple gunshot wounds despite losing a significant amount of blood for several hours. The EMT crew who retrieved Groomes noted that he had a collapsed lung, implying that he likely wore a bulletproof vest made from Kevlar.
From the closing scenes of Duster season 1, episode 2, it seems likely that Groomes will endure and remain a challenge for Jim in episode 3. A crucial element that could potentially cause trouble for Groomes is the illicit, disturbing movie that Sunglasses and Charlie discovered at his residence earlier in the episode. If Sunglasses didn’t take the film reel with him after apparently killing Groomes, it remains in the barn near where Groomes was nearly fatal. Should an EMT happen upon it, this could lead to Groomes losing his badge or facing prison time, which would resolve Jim’s issue that Sunglasses had been unable to address.
Why Jim Killed Sunglasses After Charlie’s Sudden Death
Jim Had To Defend Himself After An Emotional Sunglasses Upped The Price
In a turn of events, Jim fulfilled his part of the agreement and obtained the iconic blue suede shoes that once graced Elvis Presley’s feet for Sunglasses. Despite arriving slightly late, he made good on his promise, albeit under challenging circumstances; Sunglasses was intoxicated and deeply affected by the sudden demise of his friend and associate, Charlie.
However, with sorrow clouding his judgment, Sunglasses demanded a significant increase in the price for the shoes along with an extra $3,000, a sum Jim simply couldn’t manage. When Sunglasses brandished a firearm, it became clear to Jim that he had no other choice but to confront the situation head-on.
In a desperate bid to escape or defuse the tense situation, Jim hurled the shoes at Sunglasses as a diversion and swiftly followed with a powerful throw of a bowling ball aimed at Sunglasses’ head.
In a different scenario, Jim didn’t intend or desire to cause harm to the man known as Sunglasses, but found himself in a situation where he had no other options available. Sunglasses was a large and emotionally volatile individual, making him particularly threatening at that moment. As events unfolded, Jim was primarily acting in self-defense, even though the confrontation escalated to the point of bowling pins being knocked over. Unfortunately, during the struggle, Sunglasses’ face was severely damaged when he was caught between the pin machine. The corpse that Jim later buried, both at the end of the episode and in the opening teaser, was indeed Sunglasses, explaining his difficulty in moving it around. Fortunately, his father, Wade, arrived to lend a hand. However, Jim remains unaware that Groomes is still alive.
Who Evelyn Breen Called In Washington DC About Nina Hayes
Evelyn Speaks With A Mysterious Man In DC Named Cowboy
Nina delves deeper into the mysterious case files related to Saxon, which she and Awan uncovered at the conclusion of the Duster premiere. She then seeks out a woman named Evelyn Breen, who is either Leland’s current or former spouse, but Evelyn declines to answer Nina’s inquiries and instead dismisses her with a racially charged comment.
At the closing moments of Duster season 1, episode 2, Evelyn is depicted conversing on the phone with a man in a cowboy hat who remains unidentified. As per the Duster credits, this individual goes by Cowboy. Evelyn informs Cowboy that Nina had shown up seeking answers and wanted him to be aware of it. Given his potential political ties or involvement in Washington D.C.’s politics, Cowboy might be venturing towards the West in episode 3.
How Jim Used Adrienne Barbeau To Steal Elvis’s Blue Suede Shoes
Adrienne Is A Real-Life Singer & Actress
At a party in Palm Springs, the character Jim finds an actress named Adrienne Barbeau. Instead of doing something else, Jim manages to persuade Adrienne to divert the attention of the homeowner because he knows the people who produce a show that Adrienne desires to be part of. To clarify, Adrienne Barbeau is a real-life singer, actress, and author, not a fictional character like Jim Ellis. She has starred in numerous classic films such as “Escape from New York,” “Swamp Thing,” and “The Fog.” At present, she is 79 years old and was previously married to renowned horror director John Carpenter and playwright and actor Billy Van Zandt.
What Duster Episode 2’s Ending Means For Joey’s Death Investigation
Jim Must Finally Silence Groomes & Nina Has A Big Target On Her Back
Following Duster season 1, episode 2, it appears that both Jim and Nina are heading towards further complications. Driven by the shared goal of uncovering whether Saxon was indeed responsible for Jim’s brother Joey’s death, they pursue their investigation separately.
Nina delves deeper into the FBI’s complex past involving Saxon, which unearths missing files and potentially dangerous information. This, however, seems to have made her a target of an enigmatic figure known as Cowboy. On the other hand, Jim endeavors to eliminate a potential threat but instead ends up providing more damning evidence against him, suggesting that he is a mole within Saxon’s group.
The health of Groomes and Jim’s knowledge that Groomes is still alive will significantly impact the storyline of Duster season 1, episode 3. If Groomes dies before reaching the hospital, Jim can move on without any repercussions. However, if Groomes survives, Jim may need to devise a clever method to keep him quiet without implicating himself. Wade’s strengthening relationship with Jim at the end of the episode suggests that he will become more actively involved in protecting Jim, no matter what challenges arise.
On the other hand, Cowboy might prove too formidable for Nina to continue investigating the FBI cover-up surrounding Leland Breen in Duster, especially if he poses a threat to her safety or interferes with her investigations.
