A24 is closing its independent documentary unit, a sector responsible for productions such as “The Deepest Breath” on Netflix and Steve McQueen’s “Occupied City”. This decision will affect a total of five positions within the company.
Afflicted in this situation is Nicole Stott, a highly respected non-fiction executive and producer, formerly leading A24’s non-fiction sector. Prior to joining A24, Stott worked at Concordia Studio as co-head of non-fiction, contributing to critically acclaimed projects such as ‘Summer of Soul’, ‘Boys State’, and ‘Still: A Michael J. Fox Story’, which earned Oscars and Emmys. Similarly affected is Emily Osborne, previously serving as head of production at A24, who had previously worked at RadicalMedia before her tenure there.
The non-fiction team will extend their stay to ensure a smooth handover of current projects. Some upcoming non-fiction works include “Death Match,” a wrestling documentary by the Philippou Brothers, who are also known for “Talk to Me,” and a true crime series titled “The Yogurt Shop Murders.” The studio will remain in charge of these titles.
Company A24, known for its documentaries on Stephen Curry, Steve Martin, among others, is reducing the number of documentary productions. This move comes as many companies in the non-fiction industry have been cutting back on documentary releases after a long period of high production and significant profits. Last year, the non-fiction world suffered a significant loss with Participant Media, a key player that financed projects like “An Inconvenient Truth” and “RBG,” leaving the scene.
The latest decision was made as the production company is currently undergoing a period of change. After securing a $4 billion valuation, A24, known for its filmmaker-led movies that aren’t typically found at major studios, has been aiming to produce bigger-budgeted and more commercially viable films. Recently, A24 unveiled plans for video game adaptations of Elden Ring and Death Stranding, and in the past year, released its most expensive production yet, Alex Garland’s Civil War. Upcoming movies like Marty Supreme starring Timothée Chalamet and Smashing Machine starring Dwayne Johnson are some of their costly ventures.
