In Los Angeles, a car serves as the final touch to our outfits before we step out. It’s like the last piece of clothing or an accessory such as shoes, which are both deeply personal and practical in nature. Our cars not only reflect our accomplishments, individuality, and even political and social views – consider all the Teslas in the Netflix lot adorned with “Elon Sucks”-style stickers – but they also function as our private sanctuaries, shielding and enhancing us during our travels from home to work, meetings, and social events.

In L.A., the streets and freeways function as runways, making nearly everyone – from the doorman at Musso & Frank to the person waiting at the bus stop bench to your supervisor – a fashion critic of Anna Wintour’s caliber: they are keenly observant of context and category, always ready to deliver a sharp critique.

In the realm of entertainment, particularly Los Angeles, things are often stripped down to their core. A clear example is the prevalence of classic cars, as seen in the Apple TV+ satire titled “The Studio“, where Seth Rogen’s flamboyant studio executive character showcases a variety of vintage vehicles such as an MG, Corvette, and Studebaker, among other eye-catching automobiles.

As a gamer, I’d say that when it comes to cruising the streets of Hollywood, A-listers and top execs are often spotted behind the wheel of luxury rides. Their taste in cars can be as changeable as their wardrobes, but they usually gravitate towards well-known brands or up-and-coming ones. There’s a mix of modern marvels and vintage gems, with a few eye-catching exceptions here and there.

In Los Angeles, SUVs hold a significant lead, similar to their popularity across the U.S., but sports cars and luxury sedans maintain a disproportionately prominent status. Given L.A.’s unique characteristics, electric vehicles are prevalent. A notable new trend is visible in some exceptions: discreet wealth. Some celebrities appreciate the anonymity offered by everyday vehicles that go unnoticed by fans, photographers, and potential harassers.

Indeed, it’s important to note that most of these choices represent only one of several automobiles that individuals might possess and navigate, either by driving themselves or as passengers. In essence, cars function as a form of apparel we adopt and discard, serving to express our identities, conform to, or defy societal expectations (often all at once). Let’s cherish this diversity.
