Lee Child stated that certain novels from his original “Jack Reacher” series won’t be feasible for adaptation, leaving me disappointed about the possibility of a specific “Reacher” tale appearing in the TV show. With over 25 titles in the original Lee Child “Jack Reacher” book series, the Amazon Prime Video detective series boasts an ample supply of material to select from. Given that the program follows a structure where each episode corresponds to one book, it can only adapt a limited number of them. Some books in the series are more suitable for adaptation due to various reasons, making others stand out.
There’s often disagreement among fans about which books in the original series are superior, but many readers universally praise certain novels as the best. As for the upcoming show, we can only speculate which books they might choose. However, I can’t help but hope that some of my favorite books from the series will eventually be brought to life on television. On a related note, Lee Child has spoken about the challenges of adapting certain books, and unfortunately, one I was eagerly anticipating might prove difficult to adapt.
Lee Child Believes 61 Hours Cannot Be Adapted By The TV Show
Its Setting Could Be A Major Problem
During an interview (in the Fortress of Solitude), Lee Child was asked about which Jack Reacher books he thought would work well on television. The author mentioned that while he’d like to see all the books adapted eventually, some might be challenging due to their settings. Using 61 Hours as an example, Child suggested that its adaptation could potentially never make it onto screens because of its “snowbound landscape.” As the 14th book in the original series, 61 Hours primarily takes place in South Dakota during winter.
The book is filled with an engrossing mystery and brilliantly portrays Reacher’s knack for crime-solving. However, its chilly, snowy backdrop (as Lee Child notes) may pose problems during production. Constructing an artificial snowbound set would be difficult and expensive. On the other hand, shooting in actual snow carries its own complications, particularly because once a scene is filmed, it’s impossible to redo it since footprints from the initial take are left in the snow.
Despite numerous productions continuing to film in snowy conditions despite their difficulties, there’s still a chance we could see an adaption of 61 Hours. However, considering the show’s creators have a vast selection of books to choose from, they’d probably opt for ones that are less costly and easier to transform into screenplays. Given this preference, it seems reasonable to side with Lee Child in doubting whether 61 Hours will receive a live-action adaptation anytime soon.
Lee Child’s Right – Not All Reacher Books Deserve A TV Adaptation
Not All Books Would Translate Well To Television
As a devoted fan of the Jack Reacher series, I find myself reflecting on the books like “Past Tense” and “Midnight Line,” which are sometimes considered less compelling compared to others. Given this, it seems logical for the upcoming show adaptation to skip over these weaker installments and instead focus on the more critically acclaimed ones.
On a different note, I believe novels such as “The Visitor” might not be suitable due to its lighter action content. The success of Amazon Prime Video’s Reacher has been largely attributed to its thrilling action sequences and Jack Reacher’s commanding physical presence. Any story that fails to encapsulate these dynamic elements may not resonate favorably with the audience.
Books such as “Make Me” and “Worth Dying For,” while popular, are quite intense with their violence and grittiness, potentially making the audience base a bit narrower. Unlike these titles, “Reacher” has always managed to keep its action scenes engaging without resorting to excessive violence. A book that heavily emphasizes disturbing visuals and brutality might not fit well with what the show has presented in its earlier seasons, thus posing a risk for adaptation.
Apart from 61 Hours, Many Other Reacher Books Will Likely Never Be Adapted
Two Books Will Likely Never Be Picked Up By The Show
It’s uncertain which books might eventually be chosen for the series, but it’s clear that “One Shot” and “Never Go Back,” which were adapted from Tom Cruise’s Jack Reacher films, will not receive a television adaptation in the future, given that they have already been presented as live-action. It would come as a surprise if the show’s creators opted to include them in a subsequent season since they’ve already been brought to life on screen.
In the second season of Reacher, there was a hint suggesting that some events from the book One Shot had already taken place within the series. This implies that a separate adaptation of the novel as a full season may not occur.
