To mark its 10th anniversary, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt unveiled special edition controllers, but surprisingly, these weren’t for the PlayStation 5; instead, they were designed for Xbox. Upon buying the controller before it sold out, I discovered an interesting detail about the Xbox marketplace. Later, when I revisited the PlayStation Store on PS5, my suspicions were confirmed.
The Xbox marketplace enables you to input your billing details and purchase consoles, gamepads, and related items directly through the system itself. On the contrary, the PlayStation store doesn’t offer this functionality; it is limited to digital content sales only. This seems like a missed opportunity from Sony, as it would be extremely convenient to buy physical goods like consoles, special edition controllers, and exclusive game editions straight from the PlayStation Store on PS5.
The Witcher 3 Had A Special Edition Xbox Controller
Once Again, Xbox Delivers
For quite some time, Xbox had been distributing its exclusive controllers primarily through giveaways. However, a shift has occurred, as evident with the releases of DOOM: The Dark Ages and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Unlike before, these special edition controllers are now available for purchase, and they truly are stunning to behold. Admittedly, the recent Xbox price increase has impacted limited edition controllers, but these are high-end items regardless. I’m a fan of The Witcher 3, and when the day came that these controllers were announced for the Xbox Series X, I immediately headed to the Xbox store.
During my search, I came across The Witcher 3 special edition controllers. Unfortunately, I saw that the Elite model was already out of stock. The fear of missing out (FOMO) took over, and I ended up buying the standard special edition wireless controller instead. Despite this, I’m quite content with my choice since The Witcher 3 is one of my all-time favorite role-playing games. It’s convenient that you can purchase these special edition items directly from the console store, but it seems that’s not an option on a PS5.
PlayStation Needs To Have A Similar PS5 Shop
If Xbox Can Do It, Why Not PlayStation?
On the Xbox platform, much like PlayStation, you have the option to purchase consoles (new and refurbished), an assortment of controllers, headsets, and additional physical items through their online store. Previously, you could also purchase assembly boards. This is due to the fact that the Xbox store on Series X|S is essentially a part of the Microsoft Store, accessible via the web, which allows for billing address input. This feature adds great convenience and seems like an obvious choice.
Instead of finding a multitude of physical PlayStation items only off the console, it seems quite peculiar. If you’re considering an upgrade to the PS5 Pro while still using your original system, you’ll need to use a smartphone or another device with a web browser to purchase it. Simplifying the process by being able to purchase the PS5 Pro directly from the PlayStation store on your console would significantly reduce the hassle. Why not offer these items for sale where PlayStation enthusiasts are most likely to be? It just seems logical.
The PlayStation Direct online platform, similar to Microsoft Store, offers PlayStation products such as consoles, controllers, PSVR2, wireless earbuds, and even collector’s editions of games. Recently, I utilized it to acquire the Collector’s Edition of The Last of Us Complete, scheduled for delivery in July. While you can buy the digital version of The Last of Us Complete on the PlayStation store, it appears as though Sony overlooked the opportunity to allow purchases of the Collector’s Edition, which is exclusive to the PlayStation Direct website.
It might be beneficial for Sony to combine PlayStation Direct with the PlayStation Store on PS5. This integration would enable users to purchase a variety of physical PlayStation goods directly from their console. While purchasing these items from the website store may seem inconsequential, it’s important to remember that PlayStation enthusiasts spend a significant amount of time on their console. By having easy access to buy controllers, consoles, and accessories within the same platform as games, it could lead to increased sales. Therefore, it is crucial for Sony to implement this feature on the PS5.
