The highly debated sci-fi trilogy from a renowned creator is about to undergo a significant upgrade on popular streaming platforms, as a fourth movie is currently in development. Excited fans of the extended Riddick series can look forward to streaming all episodes on Peacock while keeping an eye out for updates regarding the next installment, titled Riddick: Furya.
It’s been confirmed that starting June 1st, Peacock will premiere the first three films in the Riddick series: Pitch Black, The Chronicles of Riddick, and Riddick. This marks the second major streaming platform where all three Riddick movies can be found, as they are also accessible to Netflix subscribers.
Before Vin Diesel gained fame as a leading figure in the film series, he established his reputation in Hollywood through the Riddick film series, commencing with 2000’s Pitch Black. In this initial installment, the film introduces Richard Riddick, Diesel’s title character, who manages to escape a wrecked spaceship that lands him on an uninhabited desert planet. There, he assists survivors in fending off menacing creatures that prey upon them. The Chronicles of Riddick, which includes Thandiwe Newton, Judi Dench, and Karl Urban, finds Riddick attempting to evade capture and resist an invading empire, continuing his battle against evil with cunning tactics. Riddick, featuring appearances by Dave Bautista, Katee Sackhoff, and Bokeem Woodbine, portrays Diesel’s character left for dead on a desolate planet following a betrayal. He then teams up with mercenaries to rely on his survival skills while confronting his most formidable adversary.
The Riddick Franchise Has Been a Mixed Bag
Over time, the Riddick movie series has received mixed reactions from critics. The first film, Pitch Black, garnered a 59% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, had a moderate box office performance, and was nominated for a Saturn Award. However, The Chronicles of Riddick, often seen as the worst part of the trilogy, received a critical score of only 28%, failed to recoup its reported $120 million budget, and was criticized for being too formulaic and lacking depth by many viewers. The third installment, simply called Riddick, managed to regain some goodwill upon its 2013 release. It earned a similar Rotten Tomatoes score as Pitch Black and became the most commercially successful film in the series, grossing $98.3 million globally against a budget of $35 million.
In another installment, titled Furya, we find Riddick returning to his native planet. However, his homecoming is far from pleasant as he struggles to comprehend the changes and fears that his world has been devastated. As the story unfolds, he joins forces with some of his fellow inhabitants in a battle against a new menace that poses a threat to their planet.
The sequel is said to have been wrapped up in October, but a release date hasn’t been disclosed yet. At this point, Diesel remains the sole confirmed cast member for the follow-up film.
Fans can start streaming the Riddick trilogy via Peacock on Jun. 1.
