Netflix Buys Richard Linklater’s ‘Nouvelle Vague’ After Cannes Debut

Netflix has purchased the rights for Richard Linklater’s film, “Nouvelle Vague,” which is a heartfelt tribute in black and white to the French New Wave, particularly the iconic 1960 movie “Breathless.

As a passionate gamer, I’ve finally managed to complete a level that I’ve been working on for years – my very own film about the world of cinema. This project took shape after an extraordinary debut at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, where it was met with a prolonged standing ovation from the audience. At the press conference for Nouvelle Vagu, I couldn’t help but share my excitement, saying, “With enough dedication and perseverance, you can create one masterpiece after another. This is mine.

The film “Nouvelle Vague” recounts the process of creating Jean-Luc Godard’s movie “Breathless.” This film focuses on Michel Poiccard, a petty criminal played by Jean-Paul Belmondo, who flees after killing a policeman, and his love affair with Patricia Franchini, an American journalism student in Paris, portrayed by Jean Seberg. Linklater’s movie, made in the French language, is filmed on film using the 4:3 aspect ratio. It stars Guillaume Marbeck as Godard, Zoey Deutch as the actress playing Jean Seberg, and Aubry Dullin as Jean-Paul Belmondo.

In his review, film critic Jordan Mintzer remarked that “This production is undeniably grander than Jean-Luc Godard’s initial film, yet it paradoxically conveys that grandeur isn’t essential for greatness. Linklater applauds Godard’s daring spirit, even though his work leans toward the conventional (it must be noted, he skillfully directed it primarily in French). If Nouvelle Vague doesn’t mirror exactly Breathless, it serves as a heartfelt tribute to the rebellious spirit with which Breathless was created – a time when films could be produced swiftly, inexpensively, and chaotically, yet still leave a lasting impact on cinema.

Scott Feinberg, THR’s awards executive editor, believes that Nouvelle Vague is a powerful contender for the Oscars, emerging from Cannes. Richard Linklater, who has earned five previous Academy Award nominations, is associated with this strong title.

It seems that Nouvelle Vague is unlikely to have an extended theatrical release in the U.S., but instead will only be shown for the typical two-week period required for award qualification, as suggested by a source speaking to THR.

Deadline was first to report the news of the sale.
