Watson’s Return Delayed: Why Fans Are Frustrated About the Long Wait!

Despite CBS canceling several shows this year, there are exciting titles to anticipate for the 2025-26 season, including a good number of returning shows. Among these is Watson, the medical drama starring Morris Chestnut, which luckily escaped cancellation during the spring schedule for the following years. As a fan, I’m thrilled that the show will continue, but I must admit that I’m not overly enthusiastic about learning when new episodes of the show are set to premiere.

It appears that the CBS lineup for the upcoming season indicates that “Watson” will not return this fall, but rather will be saved for mid-2026. The show is still set to air on Sundays, with “The Equalizer’s” previous time slot at 10 p.m. ET being taken over by both “Watson” and a new spinoff of “Yellowstone,” titled “Y: Marshals.” Additionally, “Tracker” will precede “Y: Marshalls.” I must admit that the wait for the return of this intriguing series is going to be quite challenging, as the first season concluded with an unexpected twist involving the main character, the doctor, who was seen murdering their enemy and the killer of Sherlock Holmes’ counterpart, James Moriarty.

When talking to Deadline, CBS Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach expressed optimism that the show would perform well in its new time slot, given the strong programming it’s been matched with.

I’m quite certain that Tracker and Y: Marshals are significant precursors for Watson. Watson has been doing exceptionally well in our streaming platform, so we anticipate viewers who may not tune in at 10pm will discover it on streaming due to its dedicated fan base on Paramount+. We believe this offers the best of both worlds.

Although the executive seems optimistic, I must admit that I’m not overly excited about having to wait such a long time for new episodes. I get why they need to delay the release, as it often happens during a TV season that shows are held due to scheduling requirements. However, waiting until 2026 to continue John Watson’s story feels rather aggravating from my perspective as a viewer. On the business side of things, Reisenbach and their team aim to keep the show’s appeal alive, and this strategy seems to rely on Paramount+ subscribers.

In the interim, we’re encouraging viewers to savor it on Paramount+. However, scheduling constraints made it difficult to find an appropriate slot for it. Upon examination, there simply wasn’t another suitable placement available.

For the upcoming Season 2 of “Watson,” it’s speculated that the number of episodes could be around 18, similar to past midseason shows like “The Rookie” and “Will Trent” on ABC. However, this is only an assumption, as the official count hasn’t been announced yet, and it depends on when the season will premiere and how many breaks it may have. Given that Morris Chestnut’s show is airing on a different network, these factors could potentially impact the episode count.

As a fan excited to dive into the world of “Watson”, I’d highly recommend Paramount+! Grab the Essential plan at just $7.99/month or step it up to the Premium plan for an ad-free experience, double the content library including Showtime, all for $12.99/month. Plus, opt for the annual plan and enjoy 12 months for the price of 10! Don’t miss out on this great deal. View it now!

The bravery of the Craig Sweeny-produced series in ending with such a powerful finale was impressive, particularly given the shocking Moriarty revelation and the precarious situation of twins Adam and Stephen Croft, who were on the verge of death from a targeted virus. Remarkably, despite being short-staffed, the team managed to save both Crofts. It’s expected that Season 2 will delve into the harrowing ordeal the Crofts endured following Moriarty’s demise and its aftermath. As a dedicated fan of Watson, I’m optimistic that the anticipation for fresh episodes will prove worthwhile.

At least, I must admit, it’s a relief that Watson is coming back, considering the other shows that ended this past spring. Spring can be tough for dedicated TV enthusiasts, so I’m grateful that one of my favorites won’t disappear from my viewing schedule.
