Jerry Trainor, as expected, went completely over-the-top for his tryout for the role of Crazy Steve on “Drake & Josh”.
At GalaxyCon’s latest event, the actor reminisced about his successful audition that led to his debut role on the widely-known Nickelodeon series featuring Drake Bell and Josh Peck. Trainor made his first appearance as the unpredictable cinema worker in season two, broadcasted in 2004.
During my tryout for the role of Crazy Steve, I found out that it had been filled even before my audition. Another actor had already been chosen for the part. However, when he arrived on set, apparently his portrayal wasn’t quite madcap enough, and they decided to replace him.
It was then that Trainor decided to take a spontaneous audition for the part. “You need to know, I had just graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara, where they were advising me to be more reserved, to hold back, to play it safe,” he elaborated, explaining his theater background and the advice he received about subtlety in performance.
Initially, the actor from iCarly, known for his role as Crazy Steve, performed his signature act where he appears calm before losing control. However, impressed by his performance, the casting director exclaimed, “Wow, can you do it even more exaggerated?” To which he confidently replied, “Absolutely, I can take it to a larger scale.
Then, I took it up a notch, quite dramatically, and she asked me to push even harder. I said, “Hold on a moment. I can escalate this situation significantly. What exactly are you asking for?” She replied, “As large-scale as possible.” I cautioned her, “You don’t want that.” But she insisted, “That’s precisely what we need.” So, I complied and delivered. That’s how it all unfolded, the rest is now a part of history. (Trainor added.)
As a gamer, I made an appearance on eight episodes of Drake & Josh, and even starred in their Christmas special. Later, I landed the role of Spencer Shay, Carly’s eccentric older brother, on iCarly. I got to reprise that character when iCarly was revived for three seasons from 2021-23, but unfortunately, the show was eventually taken off the air.
