Hacks is entering the record books at Max.
The streaming platform has extended the popular series “Hacks” for a fifth season, making it the longest-running live-action show in Max’s short-lived history so far. Creators and executives Paul W. Downs, Lucia Aniello, and Jen Statsky confirmed the renewal during an Emmy For Your Consideration screening held in Los Angeles on Tuesday evening.
The pickup for the Emmy-winning comedy produced by Universal Television occurs two days before its fourth season concludes. This season has been marked by Deborah Vance, portrayed by Jean Smart, achieving her goal of hosting a late-night talk show, albeit with constraints she’d rather avoid. Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder) serves as the head writer in this endeavor.
Back in May of 2021, “Hacks” made its grand debut on the platform then known as HBO Max. Fast forward to April 2023, when the streaming service rebranded itself as Max, and guess what? “Hacks” is still going strong! With the renewal, you can catch season five streaming on our freshly renamed home, HBO Max. (Keep an eye out for potential name changes for shows like “And Just Like That” and “Peacemaker,” though neither has had a run as lengthy as “Hacks”.)
Absolutely! Well done more times! Sarah Aubrey, the head of original programming at Max, commends the exceptionally skilled cast and team behind “Hacks”, as well as our wonderful collaborators at Universal Television.
Erin Underhill, president of Universal TV, commented, “Just like Deborah Vance’s character, the series ‘Hacks’ becomes more daring, witty, and iconic as time goes on. We’re overjoyed to continue bringing laughter with Jen, Paul, Lucia, our talented cast and crew, and our partners at Max.
In addition to Smart, Einbinder, and the cast of Hacks, Downs, Megan Stalter, Carl Clemons-Hopkins, Mark Indelicato, and Rose Abdoo star in the series. For season four, several recurring actors such as Dan Bucatinsky, Helen Hunt, Tony Goldwyn, Kaitlin Olson, Jane Adams, Lauren Weedman, Christopher McDonald, Poppy Liu, Lorenza Izzo, Johnny Sibilly, Paul Felder, Polly Draper, Luenell and Aristotle Athari returned. The season also introduced new cast members Julianne Nicholson, Michaela Watkins, Bresha Webb, Robby Hoffman, Eric Balfour, Danny Jolles, Gavin Matts, Grover Whitmore III, Holmes, Jasmine Ashanti, Katy Sullivan, Matt Oberg, Sandy Honig, and Jake Shane.
Through their company Paulilu, Downs and Aniello serve as executive producers, while Statsky does so via First Thought Productions. Additionally, Michael Schur from Fremulon, David Miner from 3 Arts, Morgan Sackett, and Joe Mande are all involved in executive production roles.
