The Hunger Games Films Are Coming to Max Streaming This June—Revisit the Action!

This year, the movie adaptations of The Hunger Games series have regained significant interest. This is due in part to the upcoming film of Suzanne Collins’ novel Sunrise on the Reaping, as well as the planned release of the film The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes in 2023. Lionsgate is building anticipation for the next movie in the series, prompting fans to rewatch the original films. Fortunately, all four Hunger Games movies will be available on a single streaming service starting next month, providing viewers with ample time to refresh their memories before the next film hits theaters.

As of June 2025, “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” followed by “Mockingjay Parts 1 & 2” will all be streamable on Max. These movies are adaptations of books from Suzanne Collins’ trilogy, and they narrate the tale of Katniss Everdeen, a young lady who is initially compelled to take part in a brutal competition by an oppressive government, but eventually becomes a beacon of rebellion for the districts in Panem. The movies progressively escalate in tension and action, with the concluding book in the series being divided into two films.

2012 saw Gary Ross take the helm for the initial installment in the “Hunger Games” franchise, a film that significantly boosted Jennifer Lawrence’s career. Featuring a talented ensemble cast including Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Stanley Tucci, and Donald Sutherland, this movie brought the book’s characters to vivid life. The film was both critically acclaimed and financially successful, earning an impressive $695 million globally and ranking as the ninth highest-grossing film of 2012.

‘The Hunger Games’ Film Series Has a History of Box Office Success

The films “Catching Fire,” “Mockingjay Parts 1 and 2,” were helmed by Francis Lawrence. These movies were all financially successful, but “Catching Fire” is frequently praised as the best in the series. In this film, the idea of the Quarter Quell was introduced, where past winners of the Hunger Games are compelled to compete against each other again. Popular characters such as Finnick Odair (played by Sam Claflin) and Johanna Mason (portrayed by Jena Malone) were introduced in “Catching Fire,” which quickly gained immense popularity, earning a staggering $865 million globally. To this day, it remains the highest-grossing Hunger Games film and Lionsgate production overall.

Dividing the final book into two films for an adaptation seemed to diminish the critical acclaim of the movies, as Mockingjay Part 2 was often seen as the least impressive movie within the series. Although the Mockingjay films concluded Katniss’ storyline, the original writer penned a prequel book titled The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, focusing on President Snow’s rise to power during his youth. Starring Rachel Zegler and Tom Blyth, the latest film in the series, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, is not available for streaming on Max, but can be streamed on Hulu for those eager to watch it.

Currently, the Max streaming platform is set to debut the initial four movies of “The Hunger Games” series from June onwards. As Lionsgate continues to assemble the cast for “Sunrise at The Reaping”, already boasting stars like Jesse Plemons, Elle Fanning, and Kieran Culkin, it would be an excellent opportunity to rewatch director Francis Lawrence’s prior work in the series before diving into this upcoming film.
