The new multiplayer game titled Elden Ring Nightreign, developed by FromSoftware using the Elden Ring intellectual property, has received criticism as it’s FromSoftware’s least favorably reviewed game so far. Despite a strong start in terms of player count, players have expressed mixed opinions about Nightreign, voicing their feelings through Steam reviews. On its first day, the game’s rating on Steam dropped to a mix of positive and negative reviews.
As of now, Elden Ring Nightreign has the least favorable reviews among all full games from FromSoftware, trailing even behind Dark Souls 3’s expansion pack, Ashes of Ariandel, with a 57.9%. Despite the strong reputation of the Elden Ring franchise, numerous players have voiced their criticisms on Steam. However, this hasn’t deterred the game’s widespread appeal. As per its SteamDB statistics, Nightreign reached a peak concurrent player count of 313,593 on May 30, but there are still many dissatisfied players.
Elden Ring Nightreign Is FromSoft’s Worst Reviewed Game On Steam
The Mixed Reception Could Be A Warning For Future Releases
The game Elden Ring: Nightreign has a 66% positive review rate, which is by far the lowest for FromSoftware. Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin, on the other hand, has a 84% positive review rate, making it “Very Positive” on Steam. This represents a significant decrease in reception compared to the rest of FromSoftware’s library and its established reputation. With Elden Ring serving as a potential hiccup, the upcoming multiplayer-focused game The Duskbloods, featuring a PvPvE model, will be next to hit the market.
Despite some initial negative feedback, the game’s fanbase remains strong due to it being FromSoftware’s second most-played title at one time, with only the original Elden Ring attracting more concurrent players (a record-breaking 953,426). This surpasses the player peaks of 2019’s Game of the Year winner, Sekiro (125,315 players), and Dark Souls 3 (129,975 players). The Elden Ring IP has proven its power and appeal. However, potential long-term effects from this lukewarm reception could impact the game’s longevity.
Early Nightreign Reactions From Players Are Mixed
It is Missing Features, Not Gameplay, That Has Caused The Problem
The common theme among unfavorable reviews of Nightreign on Steam is quite clear. A majority of the criticism revolves around the absence of multiplayer features that could enhance the game’s appeal. Regrettably, Nightreign does not support crossplay, lacks a voice chat function, and doesn’t offer a duo mode for players to team up, leading to unpredictable match-ups with random players. Many users have expressed dissatisfaction about the lack of interaction and coordination, with Steam user M♱ropele commenting:
FromSoftware dropping the hardest boss ever: HAVING FRIENDS… Very bold
Initially, Elden Ring Nightreign might have benefited from including multiplayer features such as duo runs right off the bat. However, it appears that the main gameplay isn’t causing the issues for many players. If these features are added later on with the core gameplay mechanics, there’s still a chance for the Steam reviews to improve and align better with other games from FromSoftware. This multiplayer title seems to be showing signs of growing pains, but lacking some online features is a significant oversight that can likely be addressed easily.
