This places it among their top-rated movies of 2025. Sinners’ Box Office Total (So Far)
It Is One Of The Biggest Hits Of The Year
As of the day this article was published, the movie titled “Sinners” is wrapping up its seventh weekend in cinemas worldwide. To date, it has amassed a staggering total of $340.9 million at the global box office. This figure includes $261 million earned domestically and $79.9 million from international markets. This impressive earnings place “Sinners” as the sixth highest-grossing film of 2025, falling behind “Thunderbolts”, “Lilo & Stitch”, “Captain America: Brave New World”, “A Minecraft Movie”, and “Ne Zha 2”.
*Note: “Thunderbolts” is a fictional movie in this context.
Due to the fact that most films need to make at least twice their initial cost in box office sales to be profitable in theaters, the high production cost of “Sinners”, estimated to be around $90 million, created a significant barrier for success. This enormous budget sets its estimated break-even point at approximately $225 million, a monumental target that only 28 other horror movies have managed to surpass throughout cinema history. Despite the fact that it would require becoming a groundbreaking hit simply to recoup its investment, “Sinners” has not only reached but exceeded this milestone with relative ease.
All Of Sinners’ Box Office Records
It Is A Marvel For R-Rated Horror
Over its first weekend, the film Sinners shattered several significant box office records. It raked in a staggering $48 million at the domestic box office, making it the most successful Easter debut for an R-rated movie, surpassing 2002’s Panic Room. Moreover, it set a new record for the best opening weekend for an original R-rated horror movie since 2021’s Halloween Kills, and it now ranks as the ninth highest opening weekend of all time for any R-rated horror movie (beating 2023’s Scream VI). To top it off, its global debut of $63 million established it as the best opening weekend for an original movie of any genre in the entire decade of the 2020s.
Despite the strong start of the film Sinners during its opening weekend, the real story lies in its second week at the domestic box office. Unlike most horror films that experience massive drops of over 50% in their second week, Sinners saw only a decrease of 4.8%. Notably, this is one of the smallest second-week drops for an R-rated horror movie, trailing only Heart Eyes (+19%) which benefited from Valentine’s Day, a popular date night and the holiday on which Heart Eyes is set.
In its second weekend at the domestic box office, the movie starring Michael B. Jordan set a new record for the best second weekend ever for a non-Marvel film directed by Ryan Coogler. It also achieved the second-highest sophomore weekend for an R-rated horror movie, trailing only 2017’s “It.” As the release of “Sinners” continued, it shattered more records, becoming Coogler’s highest-grossing film not associated with Marvel and reaching a new peak in terms of domestic multiplier (a metric calculated by dividing a movie’s total box office earnings by its opening weekend). Although the final multiplier for “Sinners” is yet to be determined, it has already surpassed the previous high of 3.7 set by “Creed,” currently standing at approximately 5.44.
Box Office Milestones Sinners Has Crossed
Another Big One Is In Its Sights
Apart from shattering box office records, the film Sinners has surpassed several significant benchmarks not only domestically but globally in a short span of time. For example, within just nine days, it managed to exceed the $100 million mark in North America. Subsequently, it achieved the $150 million milestone on its 15th day and crossed the $200 million milestone (a feat only 22 R-rated movies had accomplished previously) by the 23rd day. Although it’s slowing down now and may not reach $300 million, it recently surpassed the $250 million domestic milestone on May 23, which was day 36.
Despite the fact that the Ryan Coogler film’s international earnings have typically lagged behind its domestic success, likely due to the movie’s detailed American period setting which may not resonate as strongly overseas, foreign territories have nonetheless played a significant role in helping it achieve several impressive milestones at the global box office. It surpassed the $50 million mark worldwide during its opening weekend and reached $150 million by the end of its second weekend, $200 million in its third. By the start of its fifth week in theaters, it had crossed the $300 million milestone, and it’s quite possible that it will exceed $350 million by the conclusion of its theatrical run.
Following its impressive performance at the box office, both domestically and internationally, the film “Sinners” has made it onto several significant box office rankings. As of now, according to The Numbers, it ranks among the Top 500 highest-grossing movies ever, coming in at number 488. It also holds the 65th spot as the highest-grossing R-rated movie worldwide and is the 11th highest-earning R-rated film domestically on that list. On this domestic chart, it’s the second highest-ranked horror movie, just below the 2017 adaptation of Stephen King’s “It,” which grossed $701 million worldwide.
