I had the incredible opportunity to step down from royalty and don the cape as I bring the titular character in the DC Universe blockbuster to life – Milly Alcock. The moment I learned I’d be the new Girl of Steel, I experienced a whirlwind of emotions. From exhilaration to queasiness, my initial response to being cast was a rollercoaster of feelings.
In the context of an audition for the lead role in “Woman of Tomorrow,” Alcock openly shared her intense apprehension. Facing competition from another actor, she described the tension as an “absolute fear.” Despite the overwhelming nerves, the Australian actress pledged not to let this chance pass her by. The audition process aided her in overcoming her anxiousness, even momentarily wishing to retch. As she explained, “During a screen test, we’re all in the same room, dressed as the character. They line us up in the makeup truck and apply the same makeup before testing us on a stage.” For the role of Supergirl, it was between herself and another contender. She admitted that the experience was nerve-wracking, bordering on nausea, but asserted that such fear is normal and part of her professional journey.
Alcock becomes part of a sizable group of actors who’ve played Supergirl in live-action productions on both television and cinema, including Helen Slater (1984’s “Supergirl”), Laura Vandervoort (“Smallville”), Melissa Benoist (the CW’s “Supergirl” and “The Flash”). After experiencing an initial shock and eventually accepting the news of her casting, it was time for Alcock to open a bottle of bubbly and celebrate with friends. “I was somewhat taken aback. I initially thought, ‘What have I gotten myself into?’” Alcock shared. “So I invited all my friends over to the house, and we enjoyed some champagne.”
Woman of Tomorrow Introduces Supergirl and Several New Characters to the DCU
Under the direction of Craig Gillespie, who previously worked on “I, Tonya”, and written by Ana Nogueira known for her role in “The Vampire Diaries”, the film “Woman of Tomorrow” follows Alcock’s title character as she turns 21 and embarks on a cosmic journey with her loyal companion Krypto. However, after encountering Ruthye Marie Knoll (Eve Ridley), she sets out on a deadly mission of vengeance. This film not only focuses on Supergirl but also introduces the malevolent character of Krem from the Yellow Hills, played by Mathias Schoenaerts, who was last seen in “Amsterdam”.
The filming for “Woman of Tomorrow” concluded earlier in May, with behind-the-scenes glimpses being shared during production. This upcoming superhero blockbuster serves as the second installment in the DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters series, following the remake of Superman starring David Corenswet. It is anticipated that Alcock will first appear as Supergirl in the “Superman” film.
Prior to the release of “Woman of Tomorrow”, the series “Sirens” will premiere, featuring Meghann Fahy and Julianne Moore. However, it seems unlikely that Milly Alcock will reprise her role as Rhaenyra Targaryen in “House of the Dragon” Season 3, having appeared in a cameo in Season 2 following her regular appearance in the initial season of the “Game of Thrones” spinoff.
Woman of Tomorrow opens in theaters on Jun. 26, 2026.
