Among all the unforgettable serial killers portrayed in “Dexter”, none drew as much focus as the Ice Truck Killer, Brian Moser (played by Christian Camargo). Over 20 victims met their fate under his watch, pretending to be Rudy Cooper. Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) ended Moser’s life during the show’s first season, following a similar pattern as Moser used on his own victims: slitting his throat and letting him bleed out by turning him upside down.
In a stunning revelation, it turns out that Brian is Dexter’s biological brother. Like Dexter, Brian also witnessed their mother’s brutal death at the hands of Santos Jimenez (Tony Amendola). However, unlike Dexter who was guided by a figure like Harry Morgan (James Remar) towards justice, Brian doesn’t have such moral or ethical boundaries. He kills not out of necessity or justice, but because he finds it pleasurable, amusing even – and he intends to lure Dexter back onto the same dark path he’s chosen.
In simpler terms, Brian aspired to form a team of serial killers with his younger brother Dexter, but this plan was halted permanently due to Brian’s criminal activities. Despite his affection for Brian, Dexter refuses to be involved in his older brother’s actions. Consequently, the legal punishment for Brian’s crimes results in his execution, a decision that leaves Dexter with mixed emotions. However, as is often the case in the world of “Dexter”, nothing is ever straightforward or easy.
What was the journey of the Ice Truck Killer?
Brian is an innocent child who cherishes his little brother dearly. Tragically, they both witness their mother being killed. Unlike Dexter, instead of being adopted, Brian ends up in a mental hospital. Harry discovers him but chooses not to take him in, sensing a more troubled side within him compared to Dexter. During his time in the hospital, Brian’s urge to harm others grows stronger, yet he manages to act like a regular, honest person.
Following his release from juvenile detention, Brian embarks on a destructive path, engaging in serial murders and assuming the identities of his victims, one of whom is Rudy Cooper. During this time, he maintains a sinister connection with his brother, gradually closing the distance between them. His focus eventually shifts to Dexter’s adoptive sister Debra (Jennifer Carpenter), whom he harbors resentment towards for separating him from his brother. Over time, he manages to win her hand in marriage. However, his ultimate goal is to rekindle the bond he once shared with his little brother, and he’s willing to go to great lengths to achieve this reunification.
In an extreme act, Brian attempts to abduct Debra, intending to manipulate his brother into committing murder with him as a means of discarding his adopted persona and identity. However, Dexter deceives Brian into visiting his home, forcefully refutes his twisted notion of sibling bonding, and ends up killing him instead. The scene is a shocking twist, even for Dexter himself, and ranks among the show’s most memorable episodes.
Do fans ever see the Ice Truck Killer again?
At Brian’s funeral, Dexter is the sole mourner. This tragic loss weighs heavily on him to the point that he refrains from taking a keepsake slide of blood, an act he usually performs with his murder victims. However, in the prequel series “Dexter: Original Sin,” a younger incarnation of Brian (played by Roby Attal and Xander Mateo) plays a significant role, delving into his brother’s earlier years.
Throughout the initial stages of the series, Dexter is working on his inaugural case, probing the “N.H.I. Killer,” a moniker associated with Brian during his early murderous days. Simultaneously, Dexter is evolving his moral compass and continuing to kill, while Brian is embarking on a tragic path marked by death and chaos, one that starkly contrasts with his brother’s.
Harry is the one who starts to suspect that Brian is the serial killer they have been pursuing. This revelation leads him to a difficult encounter with the boy he had turned away, resulting in an unwanted confrontation. Although Harry can’t save Brian from his inevitable end — nor Dexter from his — he makes an effort. However, the two brothers are fated to be adversaries, not only in their acts of killing but also in life itself. It is Debra who ultimately becomes Dexter’s breaking point and the reason he holds onto his humanity despite all that has happened.
