Amid Deepika Padukone, Sandeep Reddy Vanga row, Radhika Apte admits industry is not conducive to new mom needs: ‘It’s really difficult…’

As a devoted admirer, I’ve noticed a stirring conversation arising within our industry following the news of Deepika Padukone stepping away from Sandeep Reddy Vanga‘s film, Spirit. The allegation that her ‘unconventional requests’ precipitated this departure has sparked quite a debate. Subsequently, Ajay Devgn voiced his support for the actress, and Radhika Apte, a fellow actress and new mother, added her voice to the discussion, asserting that our industry often fails to cater to the requirements of new mothers like herself.

Last year at the BAFTA Awards red carpet, an actress from Lust Stories revealed her pregnancy, proudly showing off her growing belly. This event took place as her British film, Sister Midnight, was up for recognition in the Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer category. By December 2024, she had given birth to a beautiful baby girl with her partner, Benedict Taylor.

During an interview with SCREEN from The Indian Express, Apte was questioned about whether the film industry supports the requirements of new mothers. In response, she voiced her worry, stating, “I’m not convinced they do. I’m unsure how I will manage that in the future.

She elaborated on her situation, pointing out that actors often struggle to spend time with their children due to long working hours in the movie business. “It’s quite challenging to work in our industry, considering the extended hours and typical filming methods, and the periods we miss being with our children. I guess I’ll need to find a solution for this now,” she concluded.

Significantly, this news follows a Bollywood Hungama article suggesting that Deepika Padukone was replaced in Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s film Spirit, allegedly because she requested modifications to her contract via her agency. It has been reported that the actress declined to work more than 6 hours per day on set. Additionally, it was claimed that the actress asked for additional compensation every single day if the shoot surpassed 100 days.

Contrastingly, during the premiere of his movie “Maa”, Ajay Devgn responded to the recent controversy and asserted that genuine filmmakers typically encounter no issues related to such matters. Additionally, he stated that a majority of people are now working long hours, approximately 8-9 hours per day.

Following its release in the UK and US towards the end of 2024, the movie “Sister Midnight” is now being screened in cinemas across India.
