On the police drama The Rookie, the relationship between Nyla Harper, portrayed by Mekia Cox, and James Murray, played by Arjay Smith, has experienced ups and downs. In the seventh season of The Rookie, there was a tense moment that suggested Harper and James might consider divorce. In the fourth season of their show, despite Harper and James being uncertain about their relationship earlier on, Harper discovers in season 4, episode 11 titled “End Game,” that she is six weeks pregnant. She chooses to keep the baby, a decision she expresses to James. However, unlike Harper, James doesn’t share her enthusiasm about this development. Harper communicates to James that having the baby matters deeply to her, and they manage to reconcile promptly.
In “The Rookie” season 4, episode 18 titled “Backstabbers,” Harper finds herself pregnant at this stage and isn’t comfortable with being referred to as James’ baby mama. Instead, she chooses to pop the question to him. Despite accepting the proposal, James wasn’t entirely comfortable with it since he had his own plans to propose to her. He shared his feelings with Harper, explaining that perhaps she should have considered his sentiments before doing so. In spite of this, James proposes to her as well, and both are thrilled about their upcoming future together.

In the fifth season of “The Rookie,” episode 2 titled “Labor Day,” Harper and James settle into a new home, planning to start their family and welcome their baby. Yet, Harper’s police intuition never takes a break as she grows suspicious of one of her neighbors from the get-go. Her doubts prove well-founded when, during Harper’s labor, their house is being burgled in the middle of it all.
As Harper dispatches James to the lower level, a burglar unexpectedly confronts Harper in one of the standout sequences from The Rookie. In an intense struggle, she manages to subdue him, inflicting a gunshot wound. Upon his return upstairs, James discovers that Harper has given birth to their daughter. The couple ultimately decide to name their newborn baby girl Leah.
