In the future-set animated show, we caught a glimpse of a possible evolution for the DC Universe, taking place half a century from now. Many old heroes had retired, but it was clear that Bruce Wayne was thriving, serving as a mentor to Terry McGinnis, who had taken up the mantle of Batman. Meanwhile, Barbara Gordon, known as Batgirl, was following in her father’s footsteps by leading the G.C.P.D. The animated movie “Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker” also prominently featured Tim Drake, who had previously worked with Batman as Robin.
In the two-part episode titled “The Call,” we were first introduced to the Justice League, featuring Superman and Big Barda from the New Gods. The team was joined by new legacy heroes such as Aquagirl, Green Lantern, Micron, and Warhawk. Notably, Static Shock crossed paths with Batman Beyond, where they saved a future version of Static. However, the outcomes for several beloved characters were left unclear, although it did include some surprising superheroes.
Jason Blood Remains A Magical Ally
Jason Blood was a knight who turned against Camelot, siding with Morgaine Le Fay. In response to his betrayal, Merlin cast a curse that bound Blood to the demon Etrigan, forcing him to live eternally with this malevolent spirit. Eventually, Blood transformed into an occult expert residing in Gotham, where he could summon Etrigan in times of crisis. He first encountered Bruce Wayne during a 1994 adventure depicted in The Batman Adventures Annual #2, and later appeared on-screen in the episode “The Demon Within” of The New Batman Adventures, as well as the two-part episode “A Knight of Shadows” of Justice League.
As a gamer, diving into the futuristic world of Batman Beyond, I’ve noticed that Jason Blood and his alter ego, Etrigan, continue to stand firm in every aspect. In the fourth issue of volume 1, when the demon Axilano wreaked havoc over Gotham, Blood, alongside his assistant Kyle who invented demonic energy suppressors, aided Terry McGinnis in his first magical case. Fast forward to issue 14 of volume 2, Halloween saw Etrigan unleashed in Gotham, free to do as he pleased. In the Justice League Beyond arc “Konstriction”, I found myself temporarily bound with Etrigan to put a stop to Kobra’s Ouroboros serpent.
J’onn J’onzz Works A Day Job At Jonas Investigation
In the Superman Beyond chapter 13, Clark Kent seeks assistance for a case at Jonas Investigation. Notably, this investigation agency is run by J’onn J’onzz, who is not only Superman’s friend but also a founding member of the Justice League. Reminiscent of his secret identity as a detective, J’onn operates as a private investigator in this setting. As he assumes his Martian Manhunter persona, he dons a blue hood and cape, along with blue and red striped pants. With the help of Martian Manhunter, Superman recalls a past event where he rescued an extraterrestrial society called the Mangals from oppression by the Trillians.
In the thrilling chapter 18 of “Superman Beyond,” I find myself caught up in an action-packed scenario where Lobo, on behalf of the Trillians, rushes to apprehend Superman. To my astonishment, he manages to overpower Martian Manhunter (J’onn J’onzz) during this skirmish. However, just when all seems lost, J’onn reappears, accompanied by Starfire, Big Barda, and Green Lantern Kai-Ro.
As the story unfolds, J’onn removes his hood, revealing his uniquely elongated Martian skull. In the end, through the combined efforts of J’onn and Superman, they persuade the Trillians and Mangals to abandon their hostility and choose a path of empathy and coexistence instead.
She Finds Purpose Again With The Justice League
Starfire hails from the planet Tamaran and is part of the Teen Titans team. In the story “Superman Beyond”, she helps resolve the war between the Trillians and Mangals, working alongside the Justice League. Using her green energy, she stuns several Trillian ships’ crews into silence. Green Lantern Kai-Ro advises her not to cause harm, but Starfire responds that wounds heal and scars signify the cruelty they represent. Though she appears fierce in combat, she follows orders by holding back her full force.
J’onn reveals that they encountered Starfire drifting through space towards Trillia. She seemed to be seeking conflict, and so he offered one with a purpose. Yet, it touched on some sensitive spots for Starfire, as she mentioned that old scars left by war and deception are hard to erase. Kai-Ro inquired if she was speaking from personal experience, but Starfire advised him not to delve into her private matters, hinting perhaps at her strained relationship with her sister, Blackfire. Superman extends an invitation for Starfire to join them on Earth.
The Shazam Family Share A Body
In “The Clash” episode of Justice League Unlimited, Captain Marvel made an appearance and subsequently left the team following a fierce confrontation with Superman. On the other hand, Mary Marvel was showcased in multiple issues of the comic book version of Justice League Unlimited. Fast forward to Batman Beyond, Mary had become a student at the Academy of Arts and Sciences, having forgotten her prior life. She formed a playful bond with Kai-Ro, who too could not recall his past as Green Lantern. Together, they navigated their friendship while eluding the Brain Trust.
In a close call where the Justice League almost met its end, Mary recalls her true identity and exclaims, “Shazam!”. Instantly, she transforms into Captain Marvel, an adult superhero. Now, due to some unusual circumstances, the Shazam family members inhabit the same space-time continuum. By uttering the magic word, Captain Marvel, Mary Marvel, Black Adam, or even the Wizard can manifest themselves. Kai-Ro, hoping to expand the Shazam family further, extends an invitation for them to join the Justice League. This decision proves beneficial when they confront Brainiac in a future battle.
The Warlock Still Has A Few Tricks
Batman Beyond: Neo-Gothic introduces a stray cat-splicer named Kyle, who teams up with Terry McGinnis in a mission to locate missing kids. Along their journey, they uncover hidden mysteries involving characters like Killer Croc, Poison Ivy, Black Orchid, and Swamp Thing. In the end, they discover the deceased body of John Constantine hanging from a golden tree that’s linked to the magic of the Green. Constantine used the kidnapped children as vessels for amplifying darkness and decay throughout the city.
John Constantine, the seasoned British occult expert, had imparted the fundamentals of magic to Kyle. By this time, Constantine had been living under a curse that made him die and return to life multiple times, each resurrection accompanied by severe retribution. When he decided to mentor Kyle, Constantine transferred his accumulated curses to him as a form of betrayal, hoping it would allow him to die in peace. Despite this act of deception, Kyle chose to forgive Constantine. In that moment of selflessness, Constantine withdrew the curses before he passed away.
Jack Ryder Continues To Relay The News
Jack Ryder served as a co-host for “Gotham Insider”. During an investigative piece on the Joker, this villainous character hurled Ryder into a vat of chemicals, much like in the episode “Beware the Creeper” from The New Batman Adventures. As a result, Ryder’s skin turned a vibrant yellow and his hair was dyed green. His mental state became unstable, yet he continued to uphold good values. He had the ability to transform between being Ryder and The Creeper, and eventually joined an expanded version of the Justice League.
In issue #20 of Batman Beyond (vol. 6), Ryder makes a comeback as the main anchor for News 52. When a new Scarecrow terrorizes Gotham, his co-anchor Adalyn Stern develops an irrational fear of Batman due to the Scarecrow’s mind-altering gas. Interestingly, Ryder decides to investigate the matter himself, venturing into the Bat-Cave despite no longer being The Creeper. He questions Bruce Wayne about Adalyn’s unusual fear, and they uncover a past event where Adalyn witnessed Batman severely injuring her father, a gunrunner.
Diana Travels Between Parallel Worlds
In another instance when Wonder Woman and the Justice League successfully thwarted the Justice Lords once more, Diana found herself falling in love with Lord Batman. This led her to remain on Earth-50 and wed him. Tragically, years down the line, Diana’s evil twin took her husband’s life. In retaliation, Diana ended up killing Lady Wonder Woman. To maintain harmony, she was compelled to marry Lord Superman, and together they had a son named Ur-Zod. After completely vanquishing the Justice Lords for good on Earth-12, this is the story that unfolded.
In another tale, Wonder Woman made an appearance in Batman Beyond (Volume 6, Issue #50), joining forces with Terry McGinnis. Following a review of surveillance footage showing Batman swiping gear from Wayne Enterprises and injuring Bruce Wayne, Diana Prince and Terry pursued the imposter. Their investigation unveiled that Inque was behind the disguise. Additionally, Wonder Woman was briefly referenced in the Static Shock episode titled “Future Shock,” where the Kobra leader hypothesized about a potential prisoner exchange involving her.
Barry Allen Is Far From Retired
In the series “Justice League Beyond”, Danica Williams, a guide at the Flash Museum, is unveiled as the future Flash. Previous speedsters, Jay Garrick, Wally West, and Bart Allen, communicate with her telepathically from the Speed Force. On the other hand, in issue #35 of “Batman Beyond (vol. 6)”, Barry Allen is called upon by Bruce Wayne for help with a mysterious new speedster known as the Splitt. Due to some misunderstanding or disagreement, their friendship has been strained, causing them to be apart for some time.
In the sci-fi series Batman Beyond, we see the same Barry Allen as the one introduced in The Flash’s “Year One” storyline penned by Joshua Williamson and illustrated by Howard Porter. Not long after acquiring super-speed, Barry ventured into the future where he encountered an older version of himself. This depiction of Barry Allen in Batman Beyond suggests that both stories take place in the same futuristic timeline, despite the fact that Central City was under Turtle’s control during “Year One”.
The League Of Assassins Has A New Leader
In a turn of events, when the assassin Curare alerted Batman (Bruce Wayne) about the impending return of Ra’s Al Ghul, he crossed paths with Terry McGinnis, who is Bruce’s successor as Batman. Damian Wayne, formerly Robin and now leader of the League of Assassins, viewed Terry as an imposter and contested his claim to the mantle of Batman. Damian had once donned the iconic cowl, but his sanity was compromised due to psychological pressure. Bruce assumed Damian was deceased, unaware that he was being controlled by Ra’s Al Ghul all along.
Instead of going back to Gotham, Damian decided to continue leading the League of Assassins, hoping to redirect their actions towards something more significant. Unfortunately, he was overthrown by Zeh-Ro, who initiated a coup and caused the League to divide. Those who remained loyal to Damian moved to Gotham and joined forces with Bruce and Terry to prevent Zeh-Ro from freezing the world. In the end, Damian returned to Gotham, completing his circle as its protector once again.
He Escaped The Shadow Of The Bat
After a disagreement with Bruce Wayne about his romantic involvement with Barbara Gordon and a fateful final mission that left him injured, Nightwing (Dick Grayson) chose to work independently. However, when a clone of himself turned hostile, he teamed up with Terry McGinnis to quell the chaos. A year down the line, he took over Bruce Wayne’s role as the guiding voice in Terry’s ear during missions.
Following the occurrences in Future’s End and Convergence, which redefined the Multiverse, Grayson developed a more cordial bond with Wayne and kept both of his eyes intact. He attended a tribute for the Wayne family, accompanied by his daughter Elainna Grayson. Instead of continuing as a superhero, he took on the role of mayor in Bludhaven, with Elainna stepping into the mantle of Batwoman. Initially resistant, he eventually backed her and together they, along with others, worked to thwart Zeh-Ro’s plans.
