Mark Hamill Rules Out Doing More ‘Star Wars’

You won’t find Luke Skywalker appearing in any of the upcoming movies that Lucasfilm has announced, not even as a ghostly presence in the Force.

The 73-year-old actor, known for his roles in five live-action Star Wars films and as a de-aged character on the Mandalorian TV show, proposed that it’s time to bring an end to the Skywalker saga – and he believes this is appropriate.

During an interview with ComicBook.com, Mark Hamill expressed his gratitude to George Lucas for allowing him to be involved in Star Wars during its early, modest days when Lucas referred to it as ‘the most expensive low-budget film ever made.’ Back then, we never imagined it would become a long-lasting franchise and such a significant part of pop culture. However, my time has passed, and I’m grateful for that experience. But now, I believe the focus should be on the future and the new characters that are being created.

Speaking of which, when I vanished in “The Last Jedi,” I chose to leave my robes behind. You can bet your boots I won’t be making any future appearances as a spectral Force entity without proper attire!

Despite Lucasfilm producing a movie that seemed ideal for Skywalker’s appearance – a sequel to “Rise of Skywalker” centered around Daisy Ridley’s Rey, who was Skywalker’s apprentice in the sequel series – comments suggesting Skywalker’s return are still surfacing. The film by director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, titled “The New Order,” is set approximately 15 years after the Skywalker events and follows Rey as she strives to establish a new Jedi order. However, “The New Order” is still in development, along with numerous other projects.

Previously, Kathleen Kennedy, head of Lucasfilm, hinted at the upcoming film by stating, “We’re 15 years past ‘Rise of Skywalker’, so we find ourselves in a post-war, post-First Order era. The Jedi are in disarray, and there’s much debate about their identity, purpose, and the current state of the galaxy. Rey is striving to restore the Jedi Order, according to the teachings in the books and her pledge to Luke, which is the direction we’re heading in.

The upcoming Star Wars film, titled “The Mandalorian & Grogu“, is set to release on May 22, 2026. A year after that, on a subsequent date in 2027, we can expect the arrival of “Star Wars: Starfighter“, directed by Shawn Levy and featuring Ryan Gosling.

As a devoted Star Wars fan, I’ve noticed some discussions about Mark Hamill’s comment on leaving his robes behind. In the final episode, “Rise of Skywalker,” both he and the late Carrie Fisher appeared as Force Ghosts, and yes, he was robed. However, hardcore fans might argue that when Darth Vader killed Obi-Wan Kenobi in “A New Hope” his robes were discarded. But interestingly enough, Alec Guinness still showed up in his robes as a Force Ghost in both “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi.

Chuck Hamill’s career has been exceptionally bustling over the past few years. This month, Mike Flanagan’s sci-fi version of a Stephen King story from Hamill’s film “The Fall of the House of Usher” premieres as “The Life of Chuck.” Additionally, he will be featured in another King adaptation, the long-awaited screen version of the author’s beloved novel “The Long Walk,” which is set to release in September.
