At the world premiere of their new documentary on Monday, Steven Leckart, the director of Stans, couldn’t hide his admiration for music icon Eminem, marking the start of the first-ever SXSW London event.
The festival, established in Austin back in 1987, has promised to highlight prominent figures and up-and-coming talents from various fields such as music, film, technology, arts, and fashion in London, U.K., following its expansion into the Asia-Pacific region with SXSW Sydney last year. The much-anticipated SXSW London is currently underway and will continue until June 6, taking place in the hip and vibrant neighborhood of Shoreditch in east London.
As I, a devoted fan, found myself among countless others, we eagerly gathered for the opening night premiere of SXSW London at the imposing Barbican Centre in the heart of London. Prior to the screening, a group of men with bleach-blond buzzcuts and white tank tops posed for photos, adding an electrifying energy to the atmosphere.
Twenty-five years following the debut of Eminem’s renowned track “Stan”, which explores a devoted fan’s unhealthy obsession with the rapper, Leckart revolutionizes the music documentary genre by presenting Stans in a fresh and innovative manner.
The movie traces not only the artist’s creative journey but also that of his dedicated fans, providing a lively and engaging perspective on contemporary fandom. The documentary sheds light on how social media has significantly reshaped the bond between artists and their admirers.
As a kid of the ’80s and ’90s, immersed in the rhythm of hip-hop and MTV’s vibrant culture, I found myself right in the midst of Eminem’s meteoric rise. Being a fan, I couldn’t help but be captivated by his unique style, particularly the song “Stan”. It was and still is remarkably unconventional, leaving me to ponder its groundbreaking impact during and after the premiere.
He added: “I’ve spotted a chance to create an unusual documentary… It seems there’s been an oversaturation of documentaries that are overly conventional and predictable. This, therefore, offers a fantastic chance for us to try something fresh and unorthodox.”
Or, more concisely:
He also said: “I found a unique opportunity to make an uncommon documentary… There’s been too much of the same traditional documentaries. So, this is a great chance to explore new creative directions.
He expressed how incredible it is to be a documentarian, particularly because he got the opportunity to depict Eminem’s astounding journey to stardom within one project. “It’s like sifting through mountains of footage, conducting thorough research, and reading numerous articles,” he explained, “and doing all that on a subject whose details I don’t recall entirely, made it feel almost surreal – like living a dream.
Stans will be available on Paramount+ internationally later this year.
