Although last week brought excitement for the return of the popular series “King of the Hill,” with new opening titles from creators Mike Judge and Greg Daniels, it was tinged with sadness as voice actor Jonathan Joss, beloved by fans, lost his life following a shooting by an alleged neighbor during a weekend dispute. However, fans of “Parks and Recreation” will recall Joss as Chief Ken Hotate, and his former co-star Nick Offerman shared that the cast has been reaching out to each other in their grief over this tragic loss.
As a devoted fan, I’ve always admired Nick Offerman for his exceptional portrayal of Ron Swanson in Parks and Recreation. His performances brought endless laughter to our homes across seven seasons on NBC. However, the tragic demise of Joss has cast a somber shadow over us all. Recently, Nick, along with other Parks and Rec stars, expressed their awareness and reactions to this shocking news in an update shared with People. In his own words:
“I’ve been following and processing the unfortunate news about Joss…”
This way, it’s more personal and first-person perspective is maintained while still conveying the original message.
Over the course of the day, the team has been exchanging messages, deeply saddened by the turn of events. Jonathan, with his kind disposition, held the position of our esteemed character, Chief Ken Hotate. This unfortunate incident is truly heart-rending.
Jonathan Joss’ portrayal in “Parks and Rec” showcases how significant even minor roles can become when performed by an exceptional actor. Despite appearing in just five episodes out of the series’ total 126, his character, Chief Ken, remains deeply ingrained in Pawnee’s cultural tapestry. He debuted in Season 3’s “Harvest Festival,” portraying the head of a local tribe who, for television purposes, also managed a casino. Initially, he seemed to cast a curse over the festival, but with time, it became apparent that Chief Ken was as much a joker as other characters.
Below you’ll find the episodes featuring Jonathan Joss, which are accessible for streaming if you have a Peacock subscription.
Here’s where you can catch Jonathan Joss across various episodes (all available on Peacock with a subscription).
- Season 3′ “Harvest Festival”
- Season 5’s “Two Parties” and “Are You Better Off?”
- Season 7’s “2017” and “The Johnny Karate Super Awesome Musical Explosion Show”
It seems Nick Offerman didn’t specify exactly which cast members from “Parks and Rec” he was referring to in his recent remarks, and so far, no other stars have publicly commented on Jonathan Joss’ passing. However, it’s plausible that more tributes might be shared as the circumstances surrounding his death are clarified.
Late Sunday evening, there was a shooting at a home on San Antonio’s south side, Texas. The initial reports suggested that an argument between Joss and a neighbor escalated, with the neighbor pulling out a gun and firing multiple shots at the actor. The suspect then fled in a car. Not long after, authorities managed to locate the suspect, identified as Sigfredo Alvarez Cejam, and arrested him for murder. His bond was set at $200,000.
The investigation continues, but Tristan Kem de Gonzales, Jonathan Joss’ husband, posted extensive accusations on Facebook about the couple experiencing persistent harassment from neighbors who disapproved of their relationship. According to Gonzales, they had a distressing encounter at their property when they found their dog’s skull on display, causing them great emotion.
According to him, while they were both emotionally distraught over their pet, a man angrily hurled hateful, homophobic remarks towards them before brandishing a firearm and discharging it. Gonzales asserts that Joss quickly intervened, shielding him from potential harm, thereby “saving my life.” He further added:
The person responsible for his death was someone who disapproved of two men expressing their love openly. I was there when it happened. I expressed to him how cherished he was. To all those who stood by him – his admirers, his companions – know that he held you in high regard, considering you as part of his family. Now, my priority is safeguarding Jonathan’s legacy and commemorating the life we shared.
A GoFundMe page was launched in January aimed at offsetting the financial impact following a house fire that tragically destroyed the family’s home and claimed several pet lives. Currently, donations are still pouring in, and remarkably, the fund has already surpassed its initial target of $15,000.
