Nick Offerman Slams Anti-Pride Meme and Honors Fallen Parks and Rec Star

Nick Offerman is often seen as a rugged, dedicated man’s man, much like his role as Ron Swanson. However, it’s important to note that his masculinity should not be confused with intolerance towards the LGBTQ+ community.

Recently, Offerman came across a disrespectful tweet regarding Pride Month from Michael Flynn Jr, the son of a prominent right-wing figure, Michael Flynn. The tweet was an altered gif showing Ron disposing of a computer, except the Pride flag was placed over the computer. Accompanying the image, Flynn Jr simply wrote, “Good morning and Happy Sunday! No quotes today. Just wanted to express my feelings about ‘pride’ month.

It’s not hard to understand that Offerman was appalled by the post. On X, which used to be called Twitter, he expressed, “Ron was the best man at a gay wedding, you idiot. #HappyPride.” Offerman was a libertarian who had strong dislike for the government, but he was never intolerant towards homosexuality. In the last episode of the series, he served as the best man at his barber’s, Typhoon, and his husband Craig’s wedding.

Beyond just that, Offerman starred as a gay character in a popular recent TV episode titled “Long, Long Time” from the series The Last of Us. In this episode, he played Bill, a gruff survivalist who hid his sexuality until meeting fellow survivor Frank and falling deeply in love with him. This episode sparked debate due to its depiction of a heartwarming gay romance, leading to some controversy over online reviews.

In 2024, when he was honored with the Best Supporting Performance award at the Independent Spirit Awards, he stepped onto the stage and expressed his gratitude to HBO for their courage in supporting independent storytelling. He went on to say, “Thank you for having the audacity to be part of this tradition of bold storytelling. When criticism arises that questions the need for a gay narrative, we respond, ‘Because your question is asked. It’s not just a gay story; it’s a love story, you fool.’

A Member of the Parks and Rec Crew Was Killed Recently

It’s understandable for Offerman to feel furious over such hateful speech, as a Parks and Recreation actor was tragically murdered in what his spouse refers to as a possible hate crime motivated by homophobia, allegedly perpetrated by a neighbor with reported anti-gay sentiments. The authorities have yet to find definitive evidence, but Tristan Kern de Gonzales shared on Facebook that they were subjected to vicious homophobic slurs before the shooting occurred.

In a different setting, Gonzales shared, “Jonathan and I were unarmed and posed no danger to anyone. We were simply mourning. We stood together. Suddenly, a man started shooting. In that instant, Jonathan shoved me out of harm’s way. He selflessly protected me, Gonzales added.

As a film enthusiast, I couldn’t help but feel the weight of a profound loss upon hearing the news. The cast has been in constant communication, sharing our collective grief all day long. Jonathan, our dear Chief Ken Hotate, was not just a co-star, but a sweet soul whom we cherished deeply. This is indeed an unbearable tragedy.
