The North American production and distribution company, GKids (owned by the Japanese media conglomerate Toho Co.), has secured the home rights to “ChaO“, the first film from renowned Japanese animator Yasuhiro Aoki and animation studio Studio 4°C.
In the upcoming week, the romantic comedy that combines fantasy and futurism, titled “ChaO“, will debut in competition at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. This film takes place in a universe where humans share their existence with mermaids. The story revolves around Stephan, a rather quiet office employee, whose monotonous life takes an unexpected turn when he receives a marriage proposal from a mermaid princess named ChaO.
David Jesteadt, president of GKids, described the movie as a “fairy tale that transcends genres,” and he applauded its “extraordinary and instantly recognizable characters that are bold and memorable.
This new agreement signifies another partnership between GKids and Studio 4°C, continuing a series that has previously featured works such as Masaaki Yuasa’s “Mind Game” and “Children of the Sea,” directed by Ayumu Watanabe.
Eiko Tanaka, responsible for both “Children of the Sea” and “ChaO”, described Aoki’s method on the latter as “tactful yet daring, romantic but absurd.” Regarding the partnership with GKids, Tanaka expressed that their long-standing alliance, founded on a mutual appreciation for animation artistry, fills them with excitement to continue this creative journey together with “ChaO”. They look forward to North American audiences immersing themselves in the surreal, vivid universe of “ChaO” just as much as they did while creating it.
Back in 2008, Eric Beckman and Dave Jesteadt kicked off an exciting journey by establishing GKids. Since our first release, the critically acclaimed “The Secret of Kells” by Tomm Moore, we’ve been a trailblazer in bringing premium international animation to the U.S. market. Over the years, we’ve garnered an impressive 13 nominations for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars, with Hayao Miyazaki’s “The Boy and the Heron” securing us a well-deserved win in 2024. Recently, Toho, the legendary Japanese studio behind the Godzilla films, took over GKids in October last year, but fear not! Beckman and Jesteadt are still at the helm, ensuring our journey continues.
GKids intends to debut the movie “ChaO” in North American cinemas, later making it available for home viewing and digital streaming. The agreement’s specifics were discussed by Rodney Uhler on behalf of GKids and Ayumi Inoguchi from Studio 4°C.
