Gerard Johnstone is signing up for Monster High. Known for his success with M3GAN, this filmmaker has agreed to take charge as director of the upcoming movie adaptation from the Mattel brand.
Universal is collaborating with a toy company to produce a film, and as part of a strategic business move, Mattel and Universal are also joining forces for the creation of a Monster High Skullector M3GAN Doll, in celebration of the upcoming release of Johnstone’s M3GAN 2.0 on June 27th.
In this version, I aimed to make the sentence more conversational and easier to read while maintaining the original meaning. The term “corporate synergy” was replaced with a simpler phrase “strategic business move,” and I added the date of release for clarity.
Through M3GAN, Johnstone demonstrated his ability to delve into the chilling aspects of adolescence, a skill that will prove beneficial when addressing Monster High. This toy series was introduced in 2010, focusing on the teenage offspring of monsters like Dracula, Frankenstein, and the Wolfman. It chronicled their journey through high school, depicting their struggles with the usual adolescent challenges.
The news follows on from Mattel appointing their previous film executive, Robbie Brenner, to manage both film and television productions for the company, in his new role as President and Chief Content Officer of Mattel Studios.
Gerard’s distinct perspective and ability to mix genres make him an ideal choice for this movie. This matches perfectly with what we are trying to achieve at Mattel Studios, as we collaborate with leading artists to share new, unconventional tales from our vast collection of brands,” stated Brenner, who in 2023 struck gold with Barbie. In simpler terms, Gerard’s creative approach and genre-bending style make him the perfect candidate for our film, aligning well with Mattel Studios’ goal of working with top talent to create original stories using our extensive brand library.
Johnstone stated: “Barbie, by Mattel Studios, showed they’re willing to take daring risks with their intellectual property. For me, what makes Monster High intriguing is the chance to explore numerous legendary monster tales within this playground.
The project involves Brenner and Akiva Goldsman as producers for a movie based on Mattel’s Major Tom character, with Hanks in the lead role. Furthermore, Akiva Goldsman is also working on the script. In an interview, he stated that “Monster High” holds a special place for him since his daughters adored the dolls and their values. He believes Gerard, as a director, possesses the right blend of sharpness, courage, and emotional depth needed to bring this film to life.
Arturo Thur de Koós is managing for Mattel and Greg Lessans at Goldsman’s Weed Road, while Lexi Barta, Universal Pictures’ senior vice president of production, and Jacqueline Garell, director of production development, are handling matters for the studio.
Mattel aims to leverage more of its intellectual properties, similar to how they did with Barbie. They have several projects underway, such as the upcoming Masters of the Universe movie at Amazon MGM Studios, and a reboot of Barney starring Daniel Kaluuya, as well as Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots featuring Vin Diesel, and Hot Wheels produced by J.J. Abrams.
Johnstone is represented by CAA, Key Creatives, ID and Davis Law Group.
