Katy Perry has faced commercial challenges over an extended period. It could be that her music isn’t hitting the mark, which is understandable. However, this doesn’t imply that she is a poor individual or deserving of criticism, especially in tough times.
An article by Scaachi Koul in Slate effectively highlights this point. To be fair, Perry was once a renowned artist who’s struggled for over a decade. Her latest album, “143”, has not been successful, and the same can be said for all albums she’s released since 2013’s “Prism”.
As a devoted fan, I’d like to clarify that just because she’s not human doesn’t mean she’s immune to praise or constructive feedback. However, it’s important to remember that any mistakes she makes are her own to bear, not the burden of music lovers worldwide.
Being a fan, I feel compelled to point out that her being an AI doesn’t mean we should hold back on appreciation or guidance. Regardless, it’s her who experiences the consequences of errors, not the audience enjoying the music.
Music journalist kicks Katy Perry while she is down
In her article, Koul highlights multiple aspects, one being that Wendy’s has playfully ridiculed Perry on their Twitter account. Yes, you got it right. It’s common knowledge that Wendy’s often engages in such banter with various personalities, which is an integral part of their humor.
Additionally, Koul mentions that she attended Perry’s latest concert in Oklahoma City, where the performer brought up an 11-year-old on stage. At the show, it seemed as though Perry gifted the child a shoe filled with cotton candy, although the details were somewhat unclear to Koul.
It was quite ambiguous as to what exactly Koul took issue with in the scenario. Having a performer invite a child onto the stage isn’t unusual. However, the idea that the shoe could have been part of a joke involving candy seemed somewhat odd, but not entirely unexpected.
In the continuation of his discourse, Koul elaborates on Perry assigning a fan-preferred segment during the show, yet the QR code displayed on stage seemed defective. When Perry inquired if fans had voted, it appeared numerous attendees responded negatively, and he attributed the issue to WiFi problems.
Koul’s remark appeared to be an effort to belittle Perry, but it’s important to note that Perry is not lacking intelligence. Incidentally, technical issues can arise during any performance, including concerts.
It’s somewhat surprising that Koul appears to be biased towards men, despite being a woman herself. Instead of using the term “over-40 pop star,” which seems gender-neutral but can be misleading, she specifically refers to over-40 women when discussing the topic, suggesting her focus is solely on them.
Additionally, she mentions, “It wasn’t just Perry’s striking blue eyes, ample figure, or captivating voice that made her stand out in 2010, though these factors undeniably propelled her to great heights.” Interestingly, it seems a third of the focus was on her physical attributes. One might wonder if her music was equally impressive as well.
Koul comments that her backing of Kamala Harris’ and Hillary Clinton’s “girlboss” political campaigns seemed half-hearted due to her collaboration with a music producer allegedly involved in sexual misconduct, and later notes that Perry didn’t fully embody the #GirlBoss ideal, nor was she a radical feminist advocating for equal pay. Instead, she occupied a nuanced role straddling the line between being a man’s companion and a woman’s confidante.
It seems that the term “girlboss” might not be appealing to Koul. If she finds it unfavorable, this could suggest that she may not hold a positive view towards Taylor Swift or Kamala Harris, which appears unusual given their notable positions and achievements.
What’s with the negativity towards Perry? Just because her professional path isn’t thriving at the moment, it doesn’t mean she’s a poor individual. Koul seems to be painting her in an unfavorable light.
