Lovers of ‘The Exorcist’ may experience a twinge of unease when they hear that Mike Flanagan‘s upcoming movie might not be released in theaters as soon as initially anticipated.
The movie maker recently addressed a fan’s query on Tumblr about the progress of his upcoming film within the series. It was previously announced by The Hollywood Reporter last year that Flanagan was set to write, direct, and produce a new Exorcist project for Universal Pictures, with an anticipated release date of March 13, 2026.
As a dedicated gamer, I’m all set with my priorities straight. Right now, my main focus is on the “Carrie” series I’m working on for Amazon MGM Studios, based on Stephen King’s 1974 novel. The cameras haven’t rolled yet, but we’ve got a lot of ground to cover before we can move forward with Carrie. So, don’t expect it hitting the screens in March next year. But fear not, there’s no need for worry!
In May 2024, it was announced that a new standalone “Exorcist” film, produced by Blumhouse and Morgan Creek, is coming. This isn’t a sequel to any previous movie in the series. This decision came after Universal spent $400 million in 2021 to acquire a trilogy from director David Gordon Green, but that trilogy was dropped following the underwhelming critical reception and box office earnings of Green’s “The Exorcist: Believer,” which premiered in 2023, earning $137 million.
Last year, during an interview with THR, Flanagan discussed the stress associated with his Exorcist film being marketed as a revolutionary approach to the franchise.
He vigorously pursued ‘The Exorcist’ with determination, believing he had a unique contribution to make. He stated that this was a chance to achieve something unprecedented within the franchise – something that respects its past while not relying on nostalgia. In truth, what he saw was an opportunity to create the scariest film he’d ever attempted. Aware of the high expectations, he admitted that no one is more apprehensive than him.
Flanagan is renowned for Netflix series such as ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’ and ‘The Haunting of Hill House’, as well as directing films like ‘Doctor Sleep’. His newest movie, titled ‘The Life of Chuck’, will be screened in select cinemas starting this Friday.
