Attention! Potential spoilers lie ahead for episode 7 of ‘Poker Face’ season 2. In this week’s intriguing episode, “One Last Job,” ‘Poker Face’ cleverly dismantles and twists a few familiar film tropes found in heist movies and romantic comedies. By playfully poking fun at these overused genres, the show offers an engaging meta experience. The episode starts with a chase scene reminiscent of ‘Baby Driver,’ followed by a scene set in a Blu-ray store filled with classic bank heist films like ‘Heat’ and ‘Inside Man.’ Throughout its runtime, the episode continues to maintain this self-referential cinematic style.
In a different turn of events, Sam Richardson appears as Kendall, a TV salesman and hopeful screenwriter who works at a megastore similar to Best Buy. Fresh off completing his latest screenplay – a thrilling heist movie inspired by his own workplace – Kendall finds himself let go to reduce expenses and offset theft losses. Seizing the opportunity, Kendall collaborates with a local criminal, portrayed by James Ransone (recognized for his role as Ziggy in The Wire), to execute the heist from his script in actuality.
The partnership between Ransone and Richardson is reminiscent of characters found in an Elmore Leonard novel, with them having a side-splitting camaraderie that’s both tough and funny – one being a seasoned, quick-tempered criminal while the other is an ordinary individual caught in over his head. While Kendall’s tale unfolds like a heist flick, Charlie’s narrative follows a romantic comedy plotline. Corey Hawkins takes on the role of Bill, Kendall’s store manager and childhood friend, who dismissed him from work to push him towards pursuing his dreams in the movie industry. The charming Geraldine Viswanathan plays Charlie’s boss at a tandoori restaurant, who is a big fan of romantic comedies.
Poker Face Season 2, Episode 7 Brings A Heist Movie & A Romcom Crashing Together
Charlie’s New Love Interest Is Killed During A Heist Gone Awry
As Kendall’s heist storyline unfolds, Charlie is busy making daily food deliveries at the store and establishing a friendship with Bill. One day, Bill invites Charlie out on a date, which prompts her boss to guide her through the steps of a romantic comedy, helping her navigate love.
On their initial date, it’s intriguing to observe Charlie exhibiting such nervousness – it brings an unexpected depth to her usual independent and self-assured persona. This new side of her, revealing vulnerability towards another person, adds a layer of relatability that wasn’t previously apparent. It also creates a poignant connection when the heist fails and Bill is wounded, as Charlie can empathize with the victim on a personal level.
Though I was engaged by the gradual intensification of the mystery, the final sequence struck me as implausible. The notion that Kendall’s accomplice could survive with a samurai sword lodged in his abdomen and then carry an assault rifle to the superstore seemed far-fetched. It pushes our willingness to accept the unrealistic beyond its limits (which is unfortunate, as until that point, the plot had been quite believable).
Instead, I found it an intriguing twist – a smart method to interconnect the episode’s film spoofs – when Charlie employed numerous TVs showing well-known movie gunfights to deceive the shooter. The last scene of the episode cleverly mirrors the ending of Heat, as Charlie pursues Kendall and corners him in a similar fashion to Al Pacino catching Robert De Niro, even incorporating the same memorable soundtrack: “God Moving Over the Face of the Waters” by Moby.

Charlie Opens Up Emotionally
Being a devotee of both thrilling heist films and heartwarming rom-coms, I found myself utterly captivated by the clever blend of genres in “Poker Face“. The intriguingly titled “One Last Job” was an absolute treat, with a delightful assortment of guest appearances that left an indelible impression. Among them, Richardson’s portrayal of a film enthusiast dabbling in cinematic crime stood out, and it was truly gratifying to witness Charlie stepping out of her shell emotionally, allowing herself to be vulnerable in a way we haven’t seen before.
