Criminal Minds Evolution Season 3, Episode 5’s Shocking Secrets Unveiled

In the fifth episode of Criminal Minds: Evolution’s third season, significant shifts occur that promise engaging twists for the remainder of the season. Unlike the previous week’s case, which served as a respite from the intense Sicarius pursuit, this week’s storyline involves Elias Voit’s most influential follower yet. As JJ grapples with her grief following Will’s funeral in episode 3 of Criminal Minds: Evolution, one of her oldest friends steps in to provide support during this difficult time.

In the third season of “Criminal Minds: Evolution”, Voit remains a significant figure despite his brain injury causing drastic alterations in his interactions with other characters. In episode 5, Dr. Julia Ochoa (played by Aimee Garcia), Voit’s talented neuropsychiatrist, makes a crucial advancement in his recovery just when it’s needed, as the BAU manages to apprehend one of Voit’s followers alive. The intricate plotlines of “Criminal Minds: Evolution” season 3 become increasingly complex, yet the suspenseful cliffhangers keep viewers eagerly anticipating each new episode.

Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 3, Episode 5 Unsub & Case Explained

The Brutal Man Case Investigation Felt Underbaked – Which Was The Intention

In Criminal Minds: Evolution, the cases of the week have been overshadowed by the focus on Elias Voit/Sicarius. However, the case presented in season 3, episode 4 provided a brief reprieve from this concentration, but simultaneously, JJ was probing into a fresh video uploaded to BAU-Gate featuring The Brutal Man. Despite her ongoing grief over Will’s untimely demise, JJ believes that Voit is the man in the video, The Brutal Man.

In episode 5, JJ’s investigation leads to the revelation that Voit isn’t the Brutal Killer. JJ displays an unusual level of intensity in her pursuit of the case, even going so far as to intervene and disarm a local officer to prevent him from shooting a masked individual. This turn of events, while alarming, proves fortunate since the masked person isn’t our suspect but the lone survivor of a family massacre. The Brutal Killer had left the mask behind as a suicide-by-cop ploy, further establishing his ruthless reputation.

Main Cast of Criminal Minds: Evolution
Actor Character Seasons Role
Paget Brewster Emily Prentiss 2-18 BAU Unit Chief, formerly Interpol
Joe Mantegna David Rossi 3-18 Founding Father of the BAU
A.J. Cook Jennifer “JJ” Jareau 1-18 Formerly BAU Communications Liaison
Kirsten Vangsness Penelope Garcia 1-18 Technical Analyst
Aisha Tyler Dr. Tara Lewis 11-18 Forensic Psychologist
Adam Rodriguez Luke Alvez 12-18 Previously FBI Fugitive Task Force
Ryan-James Hatanaka Tyler Green 16-18 Former military intelligence officer, sister was an early Sicarius victim
Zach Gilford Elias Voit 16-18 Sicarius

In an unexpected turn, the trial of the Harsh Man seemed to lack adequate attention. It wasn’t until we were nearing the climax that Penelope Garcia uncovered a link between the two families targeted – they had both used the same locksmith, Ronald Graber. Typically, exploring connections among victims is one of Garcia’s initial strategies. However, this episode surprisingly withheld any insights about Ronald’s history or psychological profile, which is crucial for understanding the minds of criminals in BAU’s work.

The team at BAU was determined to apprehend one of Sicarius’s followers without harm since they pledge to die before capture as a condition for joining the network. Fortunately, JJ managed to make Ronald let go of the knife he had pressed against his own throat. However, Ronald’s chilling laughter and confession that he was only acting out of personal desire suggests that the case might be resolved, but the BAU still has a long way to go with Ronald Graber.

JJ Reaches Out To Voit’s Doctor To Help Process Her Grief

Dr. Ochoa And JJ Use Her Trauma To Influence Voit

In the series “The Brutal Man”, a narrative device similar to that used in certain episodes of “Criminal Minds” for stories focusing on JJ’s traumatic experiences, like season 12 episode 2 titled “Sick Day”, is employed. Throughout the story, JJ consults with Dr. Ochoa, Voit’s therapist, about the Brutal Man case. These conversations serve as a means of exploring JJ’s emotional state. However, JJ remains hesitant to delve into details regarding BAU-Gate. She does acknowledge that she returned to work prematurely following the death of her colleague Will, a fact that was also depicted in “Criminal Minds”.

Absolutely, JJ is facing difficulties, yet the story concludes in a touching setting where Dr. Ochoa persuades her that if she can’t aid herself, she should assist someone else – focusing on Elias Voit in this instance. Utilizing JJ’s sorrow to make Voit grasp his guilt resurfacing is an unexpected but profound turn of events. Despite JJ having threatened him at the finale of the previous episode, she is now ready to recognize the humanity within him, and employ him for the Brutal Man case.

Visiting Dr. Ochoa might have made JJ feel uncomfortable or even difficult due to HIPAA regulations, but linking her pain to Voit’s gives it significance and makes the inconvenience worthwhile. It’s hard to picture Voit ever showing genuine affection towards a BAU member, and when he initially hugs JJ, she does become tense, along with Dr. Ochoa. Yet, it’s captivating to observe JJ transform her grief into something constructive.

Emily Prentiss Is JJ’s Rock After Will’s Death (And Share A Truly Bonkers Story To Relate)

JJ Can Rely On Her BAU Family With Her Biggest Support System Suddenly Gone

Following Will’s passing, JJ feels lost at sea. However, Emily Prentiss provides a steady anchor for her. Their friendship within the Behavioral Analysis Unit, one of the longest-standing, evolves even more as Emily assumes not only a friendly role but also a supervisory one. Navigating this fine balance can be challenging. Emily grants JJ the freedom she requires, demonstrating understanding instead of imposing rules when JJ disobeys orders, such as unexpectedly boarding the jet. Emily’s leadership in the BAU is grounded in trust and compassion, allowing JJ to gradually realize that it’s premature for her to return to the field.

During an otherwise touching moment of bonding, Emily suddenly brings up a somewhat humorous yet irrelevant detail from her past – the reason she ended things with her boyfriend in the final episode of Criminal Minds season 15 was because he insisted on a threesome. Although it may have been intended to lighten the mood, this unexpected disclosure felt out of place amidst a heavy scene following JJ’s panic attack.

Although the situation doesn’t quite fit for me, Emily seems to be just the right individual to console JJ following her panic attack. I’m relieved that Criminal Minds: Evolution isn’t hastily pushing JJ’s mourning. Rather, it portrays a genuine blend of anger, sorrow, outbursts, and bewilderment, which Emily and her family at the BAU are handling with grace. The friendship between JJ and Emily continues to be a tranquil source of strength amidst the turmoil, and she will require Emily’s assistance as she recovers.

Dr. Ochoa Unlocks The Key To Recovering Voit’s Memories (But It Won’t Be Easy For Voit)

Voit’s Memories Are Now Triggered By Being In A Person’s Physical Presence

In an unexpected turn of events, Voit’s recovery presents a unique aspect: He can instantly recall his past, and this happens exclusively when he is in the company of someone he had known before. The scientific explanation might be unclear – Dr. Ochoa labels Voit’s healing as “miraculous” – but the effects are unmistakable. Initially, Voit’s memories resurfaced sporadically, yet now, when he encounters a familiar face, they all rush back to him. However, unlike Sicarius, Voit experiences a chilling sense of self-consciousness that was never present before.

Voit is no longer just a cold-blooded assassin; he’s a man deeply burdened by his past actions. His remorse is overwhelming, leading him to consider suicide, but instead, he directs his pain into positive action. He decides to assist the BAU in solving The Brutal Man case as a way of making amends for the chaos he created. However, with each new acquaintance, more memories resurface, and these recollections only serve to amplify the horrors he’s already remembered.

A difficult journey awaits Voit, one that might not exactly be called recovery. Despite Dr. Ochoa potentially uncovering the key to his past, it is Voit who must bear the painful aftermath – a burden he carries even though he is now legally free. The awareness of the damage he’s inflicted will be something he will have to live with.

Is Criminal Minds: Evolution Setting Up Ronald Graber aka The Brutal Man To Be The Next Sicarius?

We Don’t Know Ronald’s Past Or End Goal – Which Makes Him Much More Sinister

In “Criminal Minds: Evolution,” The Brutal Man is being set up as a new version of Sicarius. The writers deliberately kept details about Ronald’s past hidden in episode 5 of season 3, creating an unsettling air of mystery. We don’t yet understand what sets Ronald off, but given his role as a family annihilator, it’s likely tied to his personal history. Ronald’s chilling laughter when JJ attempted to empathize with him, along with his obvious interest in speaking with Sicarius, paint Ronald as more sinister than your typical weekly case’s unsub.

Ronald doesn’t just brutally kill families; he plays mind games with them, offering them illusory choices and false hope, and deriving pleasure from leaving one person alive. Ronald has spoken to Voit over the phone, but it’s uncertain if they have ever met in person. The suspense lies in whether Ronald recognizes that Voit is no longer a psychopath. If Ronald perceives a leadership gap within the group of killers, he might seize the opportunity to take control.

Instead of hastily revealing his reasons, Criminal Minds: Evolution is subtly setting up Ronald to succeed Voit as the series’ primary antagonist. He’s not merely another unsub; he’s being carefully prepared as a lasting villain, making him more treacherous in season 4 of Criminal Minds: Evolution.
