Cynthia Erivo’s Wicked Witch is Public Enemy No. 1 in Wicked: For Good Trailer (WATCH)

Ring! Bell! Here’s a sneak peek at Cynthia Erivo reprising her role as the Wicked Witch of the West in the initial trailer for “Wicked: For Good.” A preview of the sequel was unveiled during the culmination of special, one-time screenings of “Wicked” that took place across the country.

Soaring into cinemas nationwide this November, the film For Good is a spin-off from Act 2 of the Tony Award-winning musical Wicked, which forms the basis for both films. The title alludes to the song sharing its name, acting as the equivalent of “Defying Gravity” in the second half of the narrative.

After challenging the deceptive and power-hungry Wizard (portrayed by Jeff Goldblum) in the initial film, Elphaba (played by Erivo) has turned into a persecuted outcast across the realm of Oz. Despite her situation, she continues her struggle for the voiceless creatures and an opportunity to unmask the Great and Powerful charlatan for his true self. Concurrently, her former schoolmate, Glinda (Ariana Grande), has ascended to a glamorous emblem of virtue, residing in a lavish palace within the Emerald City. However, she is unworthy of this status, as she blindly follows the Wizard’s commands. To make matters worse, she is preparing to wed Elphaba’s former lover, Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey), who now leads the pursuit for the Wicked Witch – a tangled love triangle indeed!

Trying to find a resolution to their conflict, Glinda endeavors to negotiate a peace treaty between Elphaba and the Wizard, yet fails. This unfortunate event further strains their friendship. Meanwhile, Fiyero and Boq (Ethan Slater) undergo permanent transformations as a result of these events, but we won’t reveal any more details here!

In the beloved land of Oz, matters become increasingly intricate when a young girl named Dorothy Gale unexpectedly appears from Kansas following a tornado, causing her house to inadvertently fall on Elphaba’s sister, Nessarose (Marissa Bode). The Wizard then orders Dorothy to find the Wicked Witch of the West’s broomstick. With this, we depart from prequel territory and plunge headlong into the narrative of The Wizard of Oz, though with a fresh point of view.

The official synopsis suggests that Glinda and Elphaba, who were once friends, must join forces again in a crucial situation. Their friendship is now vital for their futures, so they will have to truly understand each other’s perspectives and show empathy if they want to make things right, not just for themselves, but for the entire land of Oz as well.

Apart from Erivo, Grande, Goldblum, Bailey, Slater, and Bode, the sequel also welcomes back Michelle Yeoh (as Madame Morrible), Bowen Yang (Pfannee), Bronwyn James (ShenShen), and Sharon D. Clarke (Dulcibear). Jon M. Chu, who previously directed both Crazy Rich Asians and In the Heights, oversaw both installments. This was done with a massive screenplay from writing duo Winnie Holtzman (author of the original stage production’s book) and Dana Fox (writer of Cruella, The Lost City). In addition to Stephen Schwartz’s songs from the stage version, the film will feature two new compositions penned by the lyricist/composer specifically for this movie.

In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Chu stated that the essence of the movie “Wicked” unfolds in its second part. To him, this is the reason the story was created; it’s where our childhood fantasies intersect with our mature self-understanding.

Later on, he commented: “Our intention is to conclude this tale so that the enchanting reminiscence of Wicked can ultimately complete its cycle and remain with you forever,” he expresses. “We aim for you to view both films in the end and feel as if they were a single, unified piece.

Behind the scenes of “For Good,” we have Marc Platt and David Stone as its key producers. These gentlemen played significant roles in bringing the musical to life approximately two decades ago. Executive producers on this project include Stephen Schwartz, David Nicksay, Jared LeBoff, Winnie Holzman, and Dana Fox.

The initial film earned more than $756 million globally at the box office and received 10 nominations at the 97th Academy Awards, including nods for Best Picture, Best Actress (Erivo), and Best Supporting Actress (Grande). Subsequently, it clinched two Oscars in the categories of Best Costume Design (Paul Tazewell) and Best Production Design (Nathan Crowley, with Lee Sandales contributing to set decoration).
