For enthusiasts of Dragon Ball, this iconic series has been a consistent feature on Cartoon Network‘s Toonami programming since its launch in 1997. Starting with the broadcast of Dragon Ball Z in ’97, it expanded to include Dragon Ball in 2001, Dragon Ball GT in 2005 and Dragon Ball Super in 2017. Even during periods without new episodes, Toonami has consistently found room in its schedule to keep some aspect of Dragon Ball on air, as the series is both highly popular and deeply connected with Toonami for many fans.
Over the past few months, I’ve found myself missing the thrilling adventures of Dragon Ball from my weekend Toonami lineup due to repeated airings of Dragon Ball Z Kai reruns. But fear not, fellow fans! The wait is finally over as Toonami is bringing back our beloved series with the premiere of Dragon Ball Daima this coming Saturday, June 14. The show kicks off at midnight, followed by an episode of Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War at 1.15 a.m. After that, prepare for One Piece, Naruto, and Sailor Moon to round out the night starting from 1.45 a.m., 2.45 a.m., and 3.15 a.m., respectively. I can’t wait to join you all for this exciting lineup!
Dragon Ball Daima Anime Finally Arrives on Toonami in June
Although missing the second episode of “One Piece” will be regrettable, for both anime enthusiasts and particularly fans of “Dragon Ball”, watching an episode of “Daima” instead might just seem like a fitting substitute for one of the highly acclaimed shonen series on television.
For fans of “Dragon Ball” who’ve only watched the English version and stuck to the original broadcast dates, “Dragon Ball Daima” might feel a bit different. Unlike the straightforward narrative of past series, the storyline in “Daima” unfolds between “Z” and “Super”. Yet, it strives to recapture the spirit of adventure that the early installments mastered and were highly praised for. Additionally, with Akira Toriyama’s passing in 2024, “Daima” is now the final personal work he penned for the franchise. His unique writing style and humor are clearly visible throughout, and it’s filled with references to past events.
The anime series titled Daima, remarkably compact, comprises just 20 episodes. Despite its brief duration, it has garnered an impressive 96% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and near-universal acclaim from fans. The series’ plot can be summarized as follows: Goku and his companions were enjoying a tranquil existence when they inexplicably shrank due to a devious scheme. Upon discovering that the cause could be linked to a realm called the “Demon Realm”, a peculiar young Majin named Glorio makes an appearance before them.
I’ll be catching “Dragon Ball Daima” on Toonami starting June 14th! If you’re a subscriber to streaming platforms like Crunchyroll, Netflix, or Hulu, you can already enjoy it right now.
