Ridley Scott believes he’s “done enough” with the Alien franchise.
During an interview with ScreenRant, the director reflected on his involvement in the Alien series and expressed that he believed the franchise lost some of its vitality following the fourth movie, titled Alien Resurrection.
He remarked, “I believe it seemed lifeless around the fourth one. I’d say mine was quite impressive, and I thought Jim’s was decent too. However, I must admit that the rest didn’t measure up. At that moment, I felt, ‘That’s the demise of a series that should be as significant as Star Trek or Star Wars,’ which I find extraordinary.”
Or more casually:
He said, “I thought it lost its touch after number four. I thought mine was pretty solid, and Jim’s wasn’t bad either. But honestly, the rest didn’t really do it for me. In that instant, I realized, ‘That’s the end of a franchise that should be as iconic as Star Trek or Star Wars,’ which I find amazing.
Scott initially directed the 1979 ‘Alien’ film and later returned to direct the fifth installment, ‘Prometheus’, in 2012. He also took up the producer role for these films, and once again agreed to direct ‘Alien: Covenant’. However, he only served as a producer for the 2024 movie, ‘Alien: Romulus’.
Years later, I declared, ‘I’m bringing this back,’ and penned a new version of Prometheus from the ground up – starting with a clean slate. It was fresh and exciting, something the audience craved. I stated, ‘It needs to soar.’ No one was showing interest, so I returned once more to create Alien: Covenant, and it succeeded as well. Now, I believe I’ve done enough, and I can only hope it continues to thrive.
Earlier, Scott shared his opinion with The Hollywood Reporter that the franchise seemed “completely exhausted” after the fourth Alien movie. He suggested to Tom Rothman, a former executive at 20th Century Fox, that they could revive the Alien series by introducing it through Prometheus.
Though Ridley Scott, director of Gladiator, doesn’t intend to direct another Alien movie, he continues to be part of the franchise by serving as an executive producer for Noah Hawley’s upcoming prequel series, Alien: Earth, through his Scott Free production company.
