2019 marked a groundbreaking moment for me as an ardent admirer, when Ajay Devgn set new standards by commanding a whopping 350 crores (Rs 35 crore) for just an 8-minute appearance in SS Rajamouli’s masterpiece RRR. That equates to a staggering 4.35 crores per minute, a record-breaking per-minute rate that no Indian actor had previously achieved!
In an era when leading actors such as Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Prabhas, and Vijay earn significant sums for their roles, Ajay’s brief appearance set a fresh standard. To provide some context, if Shah Rukh Khan were to demand the same compensation for his part in Jawan, which amounts to approximately 70 minutes of screen time, his fee would have surpassed Rs 300 crores, exceeding the film’s entire budget.
Here’s how Ajay’s RRR cameo changed industry pay scales
In 2017, director SS Rajamouli unveiled the movie RRR following the triumph of Baahubali 2. Starring Jr NTR and Ram Charan initially, Alia Bhatt and Shriya Saran joined later on. At the beginning of 2019, Ajay Devgn agreed to a strong guest role. Despite having just eight minutes of screen time, he requested a whopping Rs 35 crore for his brief appearance in the film.
In terms of cost per minute, Ajay’s fee surpassed every other Indian actor, with stars such as Rajinikanth, Salman Khan, Prabhas, and Allu Arjun needing to charge over 2500 crores each to match this rate, a figure none of them are said to have reached. This high-paying role made Ajay the actor in India with the highest earnings per minute.
Ajay Devgn’s evolving fee structure post 2019
As a lifestyle connoisseur, I’ve been observing the thriving career of Ajay Devgn post-pandemic. His recent films, such as Drishyam 2, Raid 2, and Singham Again, have all proven to be box office triumphs. Interestingly, the remuneration for his roles fluctuates depending on the scale of the project. For instance, he’s said to have earned around Rs 20 crore for smaller films like Raid 2 and Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha. However, for larger productions like Singham Again, he reportedly demanded and received Rs 40 crores or more.
2021 saw him secure the title of India’s top-earning OTT (Over-The-Top) actor, locking in a deal for Rudra: The Edge of Darkness on Disney+ Hotstar at an impressive fee of approximately INR 125 crores.
In the 1990s, Chiranjeevi was the pioneer among Indian actors to receive a fee of one crore rupees for a movie. This high remuneration later became the norm for leading actors such as the Khans, Akshay Kumar, Sridevi, and Madhuri Dixit. Over time, even supporting roles began to command a fee of one crore rupees.
