‘Oldboy’ Screenwriter Sets Streaming Debut With Disney+ Korean Crime Series ‘Gold Land’

Disney+ has introduced its newest Korean production titled “Gold Land“, a hard-hitting crime thriller crafted by the writer of “Oldboy”, Hwang Joyoon, and directed by Kim Sunghoon, known for his work on “Chief Detective 1958”.

Nestled in the countryside of Korea, the suspenseful tale of “Gold Land” unfolds, featuring Park Boyoung from the “Light Shop” series as Kim Heeju. This young woman unwittingly comes into ownership of gold bars linked to a dangerous smuggling ring. As she evades a brutal criminal organization and is compelled to revisit her past in a town she had tried to leave behind, Heeju’s journey swiftly transforms into a nerve-wracking race for survival.

In the films “No Way Out: The Roulette” and “Troll Factory”, Kim Sung Cheol portrays Jang Wook, also known as “Woogy”. This character is both intimidating and recognizable to Heeju, having connections from her past. However, in the present scenario, instead of being a friend, he pursues Heeju on behalf of the syndicate.

Disney indicates that the series will offer an exciting blend of suspense, action, and emotional intensity – traits commonly found in Hwang’s past film projects like “Rampant” and “Memoir of a Murderer.” A launch date for Gold Land has yet to be announced.

The upcoming series is set to be a new offering in Disney+’s growing 2025 catalog of Korean content, serving as the mainstay of their Asia-Pacific strategy. Previous original shows include the popular psychological drama “Unmasked”, the sci-fi action series “Hyper Knife”, and the hit procedural “Nine Puzzles” by Yoon Jong-bin. In the latter half of 2025, fans of Korean dramas can anticipate the treasure hunt adventure “Low Life”, starring Ryu Seung-ryong, as well as the thriller “Tempest”, which revolves around an international conspiracy and boasts a diverse cast that includes Jun Gianna, Gang Dong-won, John Cho, and Michael Gaston.
