The Outer Worlds 2 Shouldn’t Have Been Xbox’s First $80 Game

As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but feel a thrill at the prospect of diving back into the captivating world of The Outer Worlds 2. Crafted by the brilliant minds at Obsidian Studios, known for their exceptional work on Avowed and their unique take on Fallout, this game promises an enthralling first-person RPG experience. While it may not be the most groundbreaking IP out there, I’m eagerly looking forward to discovering what makes it special and immersive.

Regrettably, even though it carries an anti-capitalist theme, this game will retail for $80. This isn’t the most appealing aspect for Xbox, particularly since they opted to introduce their new pricing with this specific property.

It appears unusual that The Outer Worlds 2, a game known for its anti-corporate stance, would be sold at $80. While games like the remake of Final Fantasy VII also carry this message and are priced in the same range, they tend to be subtler about it.

It seems our view is that a relatively newer game shouldn’t set the foundation for a company’s new pricing model. While it’s true that no game, regardless of its content, is worth $80, this trend appears to be prevalent in the industry today. However, we still believe this decision is questionable as this particular game hasn’t established enough goodwill with fans to justify such a high price tag.

“Earn,” because, once again, no game is actually worth $80.

Nevertheless, Xbox might have picked another franchise to introduce their $80 pricing model, rather than choosing Halo. Given its massive and dedicated fanbase, Halo would have been a more sensible choice, even if Halo Infinite hasn’t received universal acclaim. Despite some criticism, there remains a substantial number of fans who support this game.

Fans might find it necessary to spend around $80 on a fresh Gears of War title, given that its release date has been announced (E-Day). It’s likely that this game will retail at $80 upon launch, but fans would have appreciated a clearer indication of the price, such as what was provided for The Outer Worlds 2. Even a remastered collection of the original games could be justified at $80, although some fans argue that the first game alone is sufficient.

It’s quite possible that Fable will be Xbox’s inaugural $80 game, given the strong affinity fans have for its RPG series. While Xbox hasn’t traditionally been a hub for RPG games, this particular RPG has played a crucial role in bridging the gap and attracting more RPG titles to their console lineup. It wouldn’t surprise us if the upcoming Fable game carries a $80 price tag.

For another clear warning, we don’t believe that any game, including The Outer Worlds 2, should cost $80. Granted, it might be understandable why Nintendo would price Mario Kart World so high, given its popularity as their top-selling series. However, Obsidian is a fantastic company, and the original Outer Worlds was enjoyable, but this intellectual property is largely unknown to most gamers yet.
