First Glance: “Eddington”

2018 marked the debut of Ari Aster in the cinematic landscape with his outstanding supernatural psychological horror masterpiece “Hereditary”. Since then, he’s delivered an almost brilliant follow-up titled “Midsommar”, and unfortunately, a chaotic production named “Beau Is Afraid”. Now, Aster is back with something entirely unique compared to his previous works – the intriguing contemporary Western titled “Eddington”. This film seems to incorporate a myriad of other elements and boasts an exceptional ensemble cast featuring Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, Emma Stone, Austin Butler, Deirdre O’Connell, Luke Grimes, Micheal Ward, Amélie Hoeferle, Clifton Collins Jr., and William Belleau.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, tension escalates in the small town of Eddington, New Mexico between the anti-mask sheriff, Phoenix, and the mayor, Pascal, who is enforcing town mandates. It doesn’t take long for widespread paranoia to turn into anxiety, and eventually into violence. The first trailer has been released, showcasing a raw, rural atmosphere. Although Aster hasn’t quite reached the success of his debut film, his new work seems promising. The cast also stands out, even for those who might be feeling Pascal fatigue.

Take a look at the trailer below and share your thoughts: will you be going to see it, or giving it a miss?
