Broadway Musical ‘Smash’ Closing After Tonys Loss

Smash will play its final Broadway performance on June 22.

The Imperial Theatre run of the musical adapted from an NBC TV series will be ending prematurely, having started on April 10th. The producers, Robert Greenblatt, Neil Meron, and Steven Spielberg, are behind this production. The musical is directed by Susan Stroman, with a score composed by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, who are also known for their work on “Hairspray”.

The run at the Imperial Theatre of the musical based on an NBC TV show is coming to an early end on April 10th. The producers, including Robert Greenblatt, Neil Meron, and Steven Spielberg, have decided to wrap it up. Susan Stroman directs this production, with a score by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, the duo known for their work on “Hairspray”.

The “Meta Show” chronicles a troupe of Broadway professionals as they strive to mount a musical centered around Marilyn Monroe. However, they encounter numerous hurdles along the way. Some tunes are borrowed from the TV series, while others are penned exclusively for this stage production.

As a devoted fan, I’m sharing this news: “Smash” became the first production to announce its closure following the June 8 Tony Awards. Despite two nominations – for Brooks Ashmanskas as Best Featured Actor and for Best Choreography – it didn’t win any awards. Regrettably, it also missed out on the prestigious nomination for Best Musical.

Despite strong initial success, the show has faced challenges at the box office recently, with attendance dwindling over the past couple of weeks. It managed to attract 66% and 68% of its capacity in these periods. Reaching its peak gross of $1 million during the week ending April 20 after its debut, but it seems that this may not be sufficient to cover the operating expenses of a production of this scale.

Smash features a book by Rick Elice and Bob Martin, with choreography by Joshua Bergasse.

Apart from Ashmanskas, the actors also include Robyn Hurder, Krysta Rodriguez, John Behlmann, Kristine Nielsen, Caroline Bowman, Jacqueline B. Arnold, Bella Coppola, Casey Garvin, Nicholas Matos, and Megan Kane.
