Official Twilight Zone comic book series announced by IDW Publishing — what to know

Titled “Blanks,” this first story is the work of the creative duo – writer Dan Watters, known for “Batman: Dark Patterns,” and illustrator Morgan Beem, recognized from “Swamp Thing: Twin Branches.” Although specific plot points remain unrealized in our world so far, the cover art suggests a realm populated by entities without faces, bearing resemblance to the Slenderman figure.

In a statement, Watters expressed that “The Twilight Zone” stands alone in its genre. It’s an iconic figure in our culture, like a guiding star in strange skies, showcasing the power of science fiction, fantasy, and horror. It exposes uncomfortable truths about ourselves, particularly those hidden deep within our hearts. Our story aims to delve into this same vein; the tense space between anger and unease that has always been The Twilight Zone‘s domain.

Beem expressed his enduring fondness for horror tales, with those that gradually unsettle being his particular favorites. He noted that very few series have managed to evoke this sensation as effectively as “The Twilight Zone”. The stories in this series are akin to being stuck in a delirious dream or navigating a transitional realm, manipulating the sense of unease, of things being amiss. In our story, Dan has skillfully encapsulated this feeling, and I hope that my profound affection for all things eerie will permeate the artwork. While it may not terrify you outright, it might linger in your thoughts during the dark hours of the night.

As a devoted fan, I can’t wait for the next four issues that will surprise me with unexpected twists, thanks to the brilliant minds of Tom Scioli (“I Am Stan: A Graphic Biography of the Legendary Stan Lee”), James Stokoe (“Godzilla: The Half-Century War”), Nate Powell (“Swallow Me Whole”), and Francesco Francavilla (Jock). Notably, this run represents the first official continuation of our beloved IP since the Jordan Peele-produced reboot some years ago. What sets this iteration apart is its strong resemblance to the captivating anthologies of short stories inspired by Rod Serling’s “Twilight Zone.

From when I was just a child, I’ve dreamt about composing a tale reminiscent of “The Twilight Zone”. I often pondered if such a feat was within my grasp. You might wonder, how does one craft a timeless masterpiece? “The Twilight Zone” revolutionized television by embodying the essence of comic books, specifically the sci-fi/horror anthology with literary aspirations, unexpected twists, and a thoughtful social commentary. It challenged the boundaries of commercial television, and now I aim to test the limits of the comic book medium, stretching it to its very edge and beyond. With those towering standards in mind, I’ve developed something that I humbly present for your consideration.

Ellen Boener, co-editor of this series, states: “These comics are for anyone who, like me, yearned for additional episodes of the original series. We’re blending the nostalgia of the silver screen with the emotional depth of humanity. Every aspect is a tribute to the TV show, from the monochrome design to the connected cover set to the storytelling style. Each issue offers a distinct entrance into another dimension, led by some of the most intriguing minds in comic creation. I’m eager to unveil what these creators have unearthed.

The Twilight Zone #1 goes on sale from IDW Wednesday, September 24.
