Currently, Dewey finds himself right in the heart of discussions about a potential new series for “Malcolm in the Middle.
Erik Per Sullivan, best known for his role as Dewey in the early 2000s Fox comedy series, is the only original cast member not reprising his role in the Disney+ revival. On Wednesday, Bryan Cranston, who portrayed the bumbling dad Hal on the show, shed light on why Sullivan won’t be returning.
I spoke with Erik, and I told him, ‘Great news! The show is returning.’ He responded enthusiastically, ‘That’s terrific!’ To which I replied, ‘Indeed, we are eager for your return.’ He clarified, ‘I don’t plan to participate, but it’s wonderful that you are.’ ”
Cranston shared this exchange on Dana Carvey’s and David Spade’s Fly on the Wall podcast.
Cranston noted that Sullivan is indeed attending Harvard. He’s extremely intelligent, and as a matter of fact, he’s pursuing his master’s degree there at this moment. Caleb Ellsworth-Clark will play Dewey in a recasting.

Muniz, who is a parent, currently pursues an entirely distinct profession – he’s now a driver in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. Recently, the comeback of Malcolm in the Middle had adjustments made to accommodate Muniz’s racing commitments; it recently completed filming.
Cranston claims that it was him who kept advocating for the show’s revival. He shared that it took him ten years to convince the series creator, Linwood Boomer, to join the project.
For the past decade, Cranston has been advocating for this, and finally, after persistent persuasion, Boomer agreed, “I’ve got an idea,” to which Cranston replied enthusiastically, “Good!
