As Xbox Focuses On the Software Market PlayStation Double Down On Next Gen Commitment

With the Switch 2 achieving massive popularity and Xbox concentrating on multi-platform game development, there’s growing excitement about what Sony might do next in response. Not to mention, Valve’s Steam Deck, which has been successful, adds another layer to this speculation. Consequently, many had anticipated a new handheld device from Sony, possibly another PlayStation model.

Instead, it appears Sony is more dedicated to console development than ever before. Instead of creating a portable version of the PS5, they seem to be hinting at the PlayStation 6, with an increased focus on cloud gaming. Given the success of both the PS5 and PS Portal, this strategic shift seems quite logical.

In the course of a discussion on PlayStation’s upcoming direction (as reported by VGC), the newly appointed CEO, Hideaki Nishino, emphasized the growing significance of cloud gaming in recent times. He highlighted that this approach enables players to access games they wouldn’t normally be able to play, thereby demonstrating the internet’s increasing worth. It seems likely that the improved functionality of the PlayStation Portal is due to this focus on digital streaming.

Despite the significant emphasis on cloud gaming, Nishino underscores that console gaming remains their main focus for now. Moreover, he hinted at an exciting development, suggesting to fans that a new PlayStation console, possibly a PlayStation 6, is in the works.

“We now have a large ecosystem of highly engaged players across both the PlayStation 5 and the PlayStation 4 generations. So naturally, therefore, there’s a huge interest in our next generation console strategy. While we cannot share further details at this stage, the future of the platform is top of mind. We are committed to exploring a new and enhanced way for players to engage with our content and services.”

Should Sony be gearing up for the PS6, it could make the PS5’s console generation one of the least satisfying from Sony in terms of variety and innovation. Despite the fact that the console is packed with power, a large portion of its game library consists of sequels rather than fresh, exciting offerings. While games like Returnal are genuinely good new IPs, many other games have failed to capture the excitement of a “must-play” experience.

To put it another way, when considering the latest releases from both Sony and Xbox, Sony still holds the advantage. Although Xbox’s recent showcase was noteworthy, the absence of updates on previously announced games such as the Fable reboot has been somewhat underwhelming. This sentiment is further reinforced by the perception that Xbox may be shifting away from physical games.

At least the Xbox Ally looks cool.
