This week, the mystery behind Peter Chan’s dual version of “She’s Got No Name” was finally unveiled at the Shanghai International Film Festival. The film, initially premiered out-of-competition at Cannes in 2024, was divided into two parts, causing some puzzlement. However, the version screened at SIFF runs a tight and suspenseful 96 minutes, delving deep into the harrowing real-life tale of Zhan-Zhou (portrayed by Zhang Ziyi), a woman accused of murdering her husband in Japanese-occupied Shanghai during the 1940s. This gripping story captivated war-torn Shanghai due to its gruesome details, missing body parts, and depiction of poverty and abuse.
The SIFF also served as an ideal platform to showcase a production where Shanghai itself takes center stage alongside the stars during the festival’s opening ceremony. Post the opening day, Chan found himself moving between screenings across Shanghai ahead of its nationwide release on June 21st. In between engagements, he reflected on his experiences, sipping coffee in the back of a vehicle as the rain-soaked city passed by outside.
The narrative of “She’s Got No Name” is split between the aftermath of the murder and the events leading up to the next film, introducing new characters and hinting at the first whispers of feminism in China. Speaking about his bold decision to create a two-part film, Chan stated it was an experimental approach, given the film’s complex subject matter and the potential risks involved. However, he expressed satisfaction with the realization of his vision for the film.
