Rachel Brosnahan encourages actors appearing in unsuccessful and awkward superhero films to embrace their experiences and take pride in them.
The actress, known for her role as Lois Lane in the upcoming Superman directed by James Gunn, spoke about actors criticizing their superhero roles in a recent conversation with Amanda Seyfried for Interview Magazine.
The conversation began as Seyfried expressed her thoughts on superhero films, “What sets these films apart is that you can sense when the performers approach them with enthusiasm, elegance, and a thirst for discovery.
I can’t understand why individuals agree to a project and later grumble about it. Here’s the thing, I don’t intend to criticize other actors, but there was a period when it was trendy not to like superhero films and to scoff at projects such as this one. If you’re going to participate, then support your decision.”
Brosnahan said, “I don’t get why people say yes to a project and then complain about it later. I’m not putting down other actors, but there was a time when it was fashionable to dislike superhero films and look down on projects like this one. If you’re going to be part of it, then stick by your choice.
Directors such as Gunn, along with studio executives like him, would likely concur wholeheartedly with this idea: Any movie you’ve contributed to is a collaborative effort; receiving payment doesn’t give you license to disparage the final product.
From another perspective, actors are entitled to their personal views regarding their roles, and there are instances where the project they initially agreed upon doesn’t align with the final output.
It’s clear from Dakota Johnson’s interview with Bustle about the 2024 Sony flop “Madame Web,” she expressed, “I had never embarked on anything similar before. I probably won’t again because I just don’t fit in that universe. And I realize that now. However, in this industry, you sometimes commit to a project and it transforms into something else entirely, leaving you thinking, ‘Hold on, what?’ But it was an enlightening experience, and of course, it’s not pleasant to be involved with a production that’s heavily criticized, but I can’t deny that I understand.
Sydney Sweeney, who stars alongside Madame Web, playfully remarked during her Saturday Night Live hosting stint, “You may have caught me in ‘Anyone But You’ or ‘Euphoria’. However, I can assure you that you didn’t see me in ‘Madame Web’.
Instead of praising the Christopher Nolan Batman trilogy he worked on, Christian Bale expressed his dissatisfaction with the filmmaking process of the 2022 Marvel release, Thor: Love and Thunder.
He explained to GQ that acting against a green screen in the movie felt monotonous. “You have talented people and experienced actors around you,” he said, “but it’s challenging to distinguish one day from another because everything starts to blend together. It’s hard to tell what’s happening or what I should be doing. In fact, I couldn’t even tell one stage apart. They’d say, ‘You’re on Stage 3,’ and I’d ask, ‘Which one is that?’ Someone would respond, ‘The blue one.’ But then they’d say, ‘You’re on Stage 7,’ and I’d still be confused, asking, ‘Which one is that?’ It was all a bit confusing.
Additionally, it’s worth noting that Ryan Reynolds frequently pokes fun at the 2011 film “Green Lantern” as a recurring joke.
On July 11, Brosnahan’s “Superman” premieres, centering around the main character, who hails from the planet Krypton and is our superhero. He struggles to manage his extraordinary abilities while passing as a journalist named Clark Kent on Earth.
