James Gunn Says the “Movie Industry Is Dying” Due to Films Being Made With Unfinished Scripts

James Gunn has a “number-one reason” why he believes the “movie industry is dying.”

In an interview with Rolling Stone, the co-leader of DC Studios, who is also a filmmaker, explained that many poor-quality films are coming out because the release dates were established before the scripts had been fully written.

Gunn stated that he thinks the primary cause of the decline in the movie industry isn’t due to a lack of interest from viewers or advancements in home entertainment. Instead, it’s mainly because many films are being produced without a finalized script.

Under Gunn and Safran’s leadership at DC Studios, it was made clear that film productions involving superheroes wouldn’t commence until the scripts had been fully developed. In fact, they openly acknowledged that they scrapped one project specifically because the script wasn’t ready yet.

As a gamer diving into a new quest, I’d say: “Everyone was eager to create this film. It got the green light, set for launch,” the Superman director shared. “But the script wasn’t finalized yet, and I can’t embark on a journey when the script isn’t up to par.

Gunn remarked, “We’ve been incredibly fortunate because the scripts for shows like Supergirl, Green Lanterns, and Clayface were exceptionally well-written from the start. It seems like we have a knack for choosing great scripts, or perhaps it’s a mix of luck and good judgment.

As a gamer, I’d say not having a specific project quota from Warner Bros. gives me, as the director of Guardians of the Galaxy, more creative freedom. Previously, Disney seemed to push for an excessive number of Marvel films and shows, which I believe led to a dilution of quality – a problem I’ve seen firsthand. Thankfully, Disney CEO Bob Iger has shifted focus back to quality over quantity with Marvel, making the universe more vibrant and engaging for fans like me.

According to Gunn, it’s important to approach every project with an attitude of gratitude because we don’t have a set quota for the number of movies and TV shows at DC Studios each year. Instead, we will release only those projects that meet our highest standards for quality. Some projects will undoubtedly be successful while others might not, but our aim is to make everything as high-quality as possible on average. I won’t greenlight any project unless I am personally satisfied with the screenplay.
