Melanie Rumani, BBC Studios and UKTV Global Head of Acquisitions, Dies at 50

Melanie Rumani, the worldwide leader of acquisitions at BBC Studios and UKTV, has passed away following a prolonged struggle with cancer. She was 50 years old.

In 2006, Rumani began her journey with BBC Studios, progressing through various roles in sales and acquisitions. Her impact on the company has been monumental, responsible for securing content for forty separate pay TV channels and SVOD services carrying the BBC brand worldwide. Additionally, she played a significant part in launching new channels such as BBC Earth, BBC Brit, and BBC First across numerous territories.

As the worldwide chief of acquisition for BBC Studios and UKTV, they successfully closed several international agreements with multiple production studios.

As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but echo the sentiments expressed by BBC Studios CEO Tom Fussell: Mel’s impact on BBC Studios and the broader BBC Group is immeasurable, and it was an honor to share professional space with her. Her fearlessness and tenacity in negotiations were evident not just in business dealings, but also in how she faced everyday life.

What truly inspires us all is her courageous battle against illness and her unwavering commitment to work through the obstacles that came her way. We stand in awe of her spirit and resilience.

Everyone who worked with Mel will deeply miss her, and our hearts go out to Hass, Mel’s husband, as well as her extended family and friends.

Marcus Arthur, as the CEO of UKTV, stated: “Mel possessed remarkable resilience and always approached tasks with swift vigor and persistence. Her depth of understanding was profound, and she earned esteem within the industry for her knowledge and professional demeanor.

Mel was not only humorous, considerate, and enthusiastic,” he went on. “She served as a source of inspiration for everyone around her. Our hearts go out to Mel’s spouse, Hass, our cherished coworker, during this incredibly difficult period.
