Richard E. Grant, Ruth Jones to Star in ‘The Other Bennet Sister’ for BBC, BritBox

On Tuesday, Richard E. Grant (“Withnail & I,” “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”) and Ruth Jones (“Gavin & Stacey,” “Stella”) were revealed as the stars playing Mr. and Mrs. Bennet in “The Other Bennet Sister,” a new adaptation of Janice Hadlow’s book with the same title, which was previously announced.

The series, originating from Bad Wolf (creators of “His Dark Materials” and “Industry”), is set to be broadcast on BBC iPlayer and BBC One within the United Kingdom, as well as BritBox International for viewers in the United States and Canada.

Indira Varma and Richard Coyle have been cast as Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner, who are described as Mary’s sophisticated aunt and uncle in the story. Additionally, Laurie Davidson and Dónal Finn have joined the cast, with Davidson playing Mr. Ryder, and Finn portraying Mr. Hayward.

In this context:
* “Indira Varma” and “Richard Coyle” are the names of actors who have been added to a television show’s cast.
* “Obi-Wan Kenobi“, “The Night Manager“, “Heads of State“, “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” are some of the shows in which these actors have previously appeared.
* “Mary’s worldly aunt and uncle” refers to the roles that Indira Varma and Richard Coyle will play in the show.
* Laurie Davidson and Dónal Finn are other actors who have joined the cast, with Davidson playing Mr. Ryder and Finn portraying Mr. Hayward.

I’m thrilled to be sharing the screen with Ella Bruccoleri, who you might recognize from shows like “Call the Midwife” and “Bridgerton,” in our upcoming production where I play Mary Bennet. What a delightful cast this is shaping up to be!

The origin of this adaptation is screenwriter Sarah Quintrell, known for her work on “The Power” and “Ella.” Filming for the 10-episode series has already started in Wales.

In the story, Mary becomes the governess for the Gardiner’s three children – Marianne, George, and Rebecca – taking them under her care. She’s introduced to a vibrant social circle that includes characters like Mr Hayward, Mr Ryder, and Ann Baxter.

This adaptation delves deeper into the universe of “Pride and Prejudice” by focusing on the lesser-known viewpoint of Mary Bennet. Sarah Quintrell is set to write nine of the half-hour episodes, while Maddie Dai contributes one. The series will be helmed by directors Jennifer Sheridan (of “Extraordinary”) and Asim Abbasi (“Cake”).

According to Lindsay Salt, director of BBC Drama, it’s delightful to witness the cameras rolling on our fresh, humorous, and intelligent interpretation of Jane Austen’s cherished universe. With a flawlessly chosen cast headed by Ella, Ruth, and Richard, The Other Bennet Sister promises to be an enticing treat for viewers when it airs on the BBC in the coming year.

Jane Tranter from Bad Wolf shared, “We’ve been quietly developing The Other Bennet Sister for quite some time now. Janice’s characters, so vividly portrayed, have flourished in our minds during this period while Sarah was writing the scripts. This meant that our actors had a high bar to reach – and I must say, we’ve assembled an ensemble cast that truly surpasses our dreams.
