It’s fair to conclude that the live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon by Universal has been nothing short of triumphant.
Produced, directed, and written by Dean DeBlois (the same person who managed the DreamWorks Animation trilogy which you can watch all three of here), this captivating fantasy film garnered close to $200 million at the worldwide box office during its opening weekend. The studio had such faith in the production that they approved a sequel as early as April, although you’ll have to wait another two years before seeing it.
When does the live-action How to Train Your Dragon sequel come out?
As a gaming enthusiast, I’m super excited that the next chapter of my beloved “How to Train Your Dragon” saga is coming out! Titled appropriately as “How to Train Your Dragon 2,” it’s scheduled for its grand premiere on June 11, 2027. Can’t wait to catch it at the cinemas!

What will the live-action How to Train Your Dragon 2 be about?
At present, specifics about the storyline are not very clear yet, but it’s likely that the sequel will closely resemble the plot of its animated predecessor, which is “How to Train Your Dragon 2”.
In 2014’s sequel, DeBlois assumed both writing and directing roles. This installment brings back Hiccup (Jay Baruchel), who finds his missing mother Valka (Cate Blanchett) and confronts the ambitious antagonist Drago Bludvist (Djimon Hounsou).
I’m eagerly anticipating the public reaction to this upcoming film,” DeBlois shared with SYFY Wire. “If the audience appreciates the authenticity we’ve aimed for, it could pave the way for more in-depth scenes and corrections on aspects I wish we had handled better in the past. The second movie is particularly cherished by fans, so if my assumption holds true and they enjoy revisiting the story with fresh perspectives, then that’s the route I’ll take. For now, I’m just keeping a close watch to see how this film is received.

Who will star in the live-action How to Train Your Dragon 2?
Although it may take a while before we hear about the actors playing Valka and Bludvist being confirmed, fans can be confident that the existing cast members – Mason Thames (Hiccup), Gerard Butler (Stoick the Vast), Nico Parker (Astrid), Nick Frost (Gobber), Julian Dennison (Fishlegs), Gabriel Howell (Snotlout), Bronwyn James (Ruffnut), Harry Trevaldwyn (Tuffnut), Ruth Codd (Phlegma), Peter Serafinowicz (Spitelout), and Murray McArthur (Hoark) – will reprise their roles in the sequel.
