Marjorie Grande, Ariana Grande’s beloved “Nonna,” has died. She was 99.
The Grande family announced her death on social media on Tuesday.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our cherished family matriarch, Marjorie (Nonna) Grande. She passed away tranquilly at home, with her loved ones by her side throughout her final weeks,” they penned in a post. “We appreciate your affection, assistance, and understanding as we mourn and honor her stunning, extraordinary life. With love, The Grandes.
Joan Grande’s mom, Marjorie, was married to the late Frank Grande and together they had two kids, Judy and Joan. She now enjoys being a grandmother to three lovely grandkids: Ariana, Frankie, and Lani (who is Judy’s only child).
Frankie expressed his deep affection for his deceased grandmother on Instagram, saying, “I adore you infinitely, my dear Nonna. I yearn for you more than language can express. My heart is broken, yet I sense your presence guiding me, already filled with pride for all that I’ve accomplished and what lies ahead.
Marjorie, who would have celebrated her 100th birthday in October, was a passionate fan of Ariana’s thriving profession. The Oscar-nominated artist frequently expressed her affection for her grandmother publicly. Following the release of Wicked last year, the “we can’t be friends” singer posted a photo on her Instagram Stories of herself, her brother, and her grandmother. In the caption, she mentioned that she had traveled to Boca Raton, Florida for a day to watch Wicked with her grandmother (Nonna).
Ariana, like many others, has collaborated with Marjorie over the course of her successful music career. For instance, during her “God is a woman” performance in 2018, she performed alongside Marjorie, Joan, and Lani. Moreover, Ariana is also recognized for her appearances in Marjorie’s musical catalog. On the final track of her 2024 album, “eternal sunshine“, she is the only featured artist.
Marjorie’s piece about “everyday items” became historical as she became the oldest artist to ever show up on the Billboard Hot 100, following her debut at position 55. At that time, Ariana honored this achievement on Instagram by saying, “cheering for the one-of-a-kind, most beautiful grandmother who has now made history as the oldest person to ever appear on the @billboard Hot100,” along with a picture of her grandma holding up an award plaque.
At the end of the song, Marjorie offers advice from her marriage with Frank. “I could have walked away so many times, you know?” she admits, “But we didn’t always avoid arguments, you understand? You can overcome those, you know? It’s quite simple,” she continues. She also emphasizes the importance of never going to bed without saying goodnight, stating that it’s one of the worst things a couple can do. If a partner feels uncomfortable with this, Marjorie advises, “Then you’re in the wrong relationship. Leave.
Survivors include her daughters; Joan and Judy, and her grandchildren; Lani, Frankie and Ariana.
